The second leg of the Italian men’s SuperLega Credem Banca new season is set to get underway on Saturday with a big game between two of the semifinalists in the Supercoppa Italiana two weeks ago, Mint Vero Volley Monza and Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza. The other five matches of the leg are scheduled on Sunday.

Vero Volley will host Gas Sales at the Opiquad Arena, starting at 18:00 local time (16:00 UTC) on October 5. The two teams are neighbours in the current standings, in sixth and fifth place, respectively, after winning their season openers last week. While the team from Piacenza produced a four-set home win over Valsa Group Modena, the squad from Monza had to fight for five sets before overcoming SuperLega rookies Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina at their house.

Vero Volley have won seven of the previous 11 encounters with Gas Sales. That includes their regular season meetings in 2023-2024, both of which were resolved after five-set battles.

“Against Grottazzolina, the boys were very good, always remaining focused on the match despite our critical issues and the difficulties encountered on the court, facing a well-organized team determined to fight until the end. On Saturday, we will face a Piacenza that is profoundly renewed, but already rather ‘synchronized’ in the dynamics of the game. We expect a very challenging match, given the quality of their team, and we are preparing ourselves the best way we can to be competitive.” Massimo Eccheli, head coach of Mint Vero Volley Monza
“Monza are not yet at full strength, but this must not make us lower our guard. They remain a tough team to beat and proved it in the first championship match. I have many friends in Monza. There I have experienced many good moments and also some less good ones in terms of results. I will return very willingly even if it is for the first time as an opponent. I consider Monza a bit like my home. It will be exciting, but once the ball is in play I will do everything to help my new team win the match. We will have to be fighters as Monza are a difficult team to face.” Gianluca Galassi, middle blocker of Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza

In Sunday’s opening match at 15:20 (13:20), last season’s bronze medallists Allianz Milan will try to bounce back from their unpleasant start a week ago, when they were stunned in straight sets upon their visit to Gioiella Prisma Taranto. They will now play their first home game of the season, but a recovery will be far from easy against a strong opponent like Cucine Lube Civitanova, who had a successful debut with a four-set home victory over Sonepar Padua. Based on head-to-head precedents, Lube are favourites, having won 20 of the previous 27 official encounters with Allianz.

“I'm very happy to start playing at home and to meet the Milan crowd at the Allianz Cloud after having followed several matches remotely with great pleasure last year. The start of a tournament is always a bit strange and we paid the price in Taranto against a great team that played an extraordinary match. There are no safe bets - this is the SuperLega! We must face the match against Lube with great concentration and raise the level of play that we were unable to express in Puglia. We also ask our fans for help, because winning and scoring points means growing in confidence and awareness of the value we have as a team.” Yacine Louati, outside hitter of Allianz Milan
“From a physical point of view, I feel better after the abdominal discomfort that preceded the start of the regular season. I can't wait to play against Milan. I'm a former player of the opponents and this is an extra incentive to do well. Allianz have also changed a lot during the transfer period. We will study the rivals by watching their first game, also to take inspiration from the Taranto team. We will have to focus on our half of the court trying to increase efficiency from the nine-metre line.” Barthelemy Chinenyeze, middle blocker of Cucine Lube Civitanova

Gioiella Prisma Taranto, who made headlines with their shutout of Allianz last week, will now have a difficult visit to reigning European champions Itas Trentino Trento, who started the season with a four-set away victory over Cisterna Volley. The game is on Sunday at 17:00 (15:00).

At the same time, defending champions Sir Susa Vim Perugia will try to follow up on their straight-set home win over Rana Verona with more success on the road at Sonepar Padua.

The rest of the Sunday evening programme will offer two matches between teams fighting to score their first wins of the season: Valsa Group Modena v Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina at 18:00 (16:00) and Rana Verona v Cisterna Volley at 19:00 (17:00).
