Rana Verona’s Konstantin Abaev and Lorenzo Cortesia in action

In one of the most interesting fixtures of the Italian men’s SuperLega Credem Banca fourth leg this weekend, neighbours in the table Rana Verona and Cucine Lube Civitanova will go head to head in search for their third victories since the start of the regular season and an attempt to stay close to the three undefeated leaders. The match will open Sunday’s five-game programme, while the SuperLega weekend will get underway on Saturday, October 19, with an evening match between Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza v Gioiella Prisma Taranto.

Rana Verona host Cucine Lube Civitanova in one of the two opening matches on Sunday, October 20, starting at 16:00 local time (14:00 UTC) at the Agsm AIM competition hall. Each of the two opponents is on a 2-1 win-loss record, but Lube are fourth in the current standings on 6 points, while Verona are just below them, in fifth place on 5 points. Whoever wins this match will be sure to stay within the top four of the table as one of only four teams with three or more victories.

Lube have a wide lead in the head-to-head series with Verona. They have won 43 of the 52 encounters between the two clubs in history. Last season, Verona and Lube meet four times - twice in the regular season and twice in the fifth place playoffs – and achieved two victories each. Lube won the last match (in four sets) to claim the fifth place in the final standings and qualify for this season’s CEV Challenge Cup.

“The match against Civitanova will be difficult. Despite having changed, they remain very strong. They have made a mix of players with little experience and others who have a lot of it. I realize that it will be a complicated match both from a technical and an emotional point of view, so we have to give it our all, be very clear on the court right from the start, and raise the level of our game.” Radostin Stoytchev, head coach of Rana Verona
“We definitely have to improve on some aspects. Consistency is one of the prerogatives, which we have to focus on in training. We know we have a lot of room for improvement.” Giampaolo Medei, head coach of Cucine Lube Civitanova

In another very interesting fixture on Sunday, two of last season’s medallists will come face to face in an attempt to recover from their shaky start this season. Runners-up Mint Vero Volley Monza welcome bronze medallists Allianz Milan to the Opiquad Arena at 19:00 (17:00) in this weekend’s closing match. Both teams are now in the lower half of the table on 3 points and a 1-2 win-loss record each. Allianz are in eighth place, while Vero Volley are third from the bottom, in 10th place. The good news for Vero Volley is that their most recent incoming transfer, top-calibre striker Ivan Zaytsev, is now already eligible to play. The club from Milan leads the head-to-head record by 14 wins to 11 for their neighbours from Monza.

The fourth leg will get underway on Saturday. Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza, one of the three undefeated teams so far this season, currently standing on 9 points, second to Itas Trentino Trento on point ratio, entertain Gioiella Prisma Taranto at 20:30 (18:30). The visitors are ninth in the table on 3 and 1-2.

Table leaders Itas Trentino Trento also play at home. The reigning European champions host Valsa Group Modena on Sunday at 16:00 (14:00). The squad from Modena is in seventh place, also on 3 and 1-2.

Reigning world champions and defending Italian champions Sir Susa Vim Perugia, the third still unbeaten team in the SuperLega, have a home game as well. Standing third on 8 points, the Block Devils welcome Cisterna Volley, second from the bottom on 1 and 0-3, one of the two winless teams in the league, on Sunday at 18:00 (16:00).

At the same starting hour, the other winless team, rookies Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina, entertain sixth-placed Sonepar Padova Padua (4, 1-2) in search for at least their second point in the top division.
