Sir’s Ishikawa tries to penetrate a three-man Trentino block during the Supercoppa final

As the fifth leg of Italian men’s SuperLega Credem Banca regular season action unfolds this weekend, the mighty clash between undefeated Itas Trentino Trento and Sir Susa Vim Perugia, a remake of last month’s Supercoppa Italiana final, clearly holds the spotlight.

Reigning European club champions Itas Trentino Trento will host reigning club world champions and defending Italian champions Sir Susa Vim Perugia at a sold-out ilT quotidiano Arena on Sunday, October 27, at 18:00 local time (17:00 UTC). As both teams are still undefeated since the start of the SuperLega season, one is bound to suffer their first setback. Trentino are on top of the current standings on a full set of 12 points and 4-0 win-loss record, while Sir and in third place on 11 and 4-0.

When they met in the super cup final on September 22 in Florence, a titanic five-set battle unfolded with Sir eventually celebrating a 3-2 (25-18, 19-25, 15-25, 25-17, 15-9) victory. Japanese star Yuki Ishikawa led the winners with 20 points, while Trentino’s new opposite Gabriel Garcia of USA produced a match-high 24. Each of the three of their encounters during the 2023-2024 season were resolved in four sets. They exchanged victories during the SuperLega Credem Banca regular season, while Sir won the Supercoppa semifinal last fall. The club from Perugia leads the all-time head-to-head series against their opponents from Trento by 31-24 in wins.

“All the big matches in the Italian championship usually offer great balance and two teams competing closely in every set. Perugia arrive on Sunday and we already feel the charge to get to the top of this event, which is one of the most anticipated of the season. The arena will be full and we will try to offer our best volleyball to win.” Jan Kozamernik, middle blocker of Itas Trentino Trento
“The super cup was an early season match; they did well in one set, we were better in another... In the end, what mattered was the victory and we managed to bring it home. This Sunday’s match will be a completely different game because there are more matches and more training sessions behind us and so the teams, both ours and theirs, have had the chance to fix those things that maybe didn't go well.” Roberto Russo, middle blocker of Sir Susa Vim Perugia

As usual, there will be plenty of excitement elsewhere too. Allianz Milan and Rana Verona, for example, will engage in a high-level duel on Sunday at 16:00 (15:00). The hosts, last season’s bronze medallists, will try to build on last week’s important victory at Mint Vero Volley Monza, which lifted them to sixth place in the current standings on 6 and 2-2. Verona, on the other hand, will aim to extend their winning streak with a fourth consecutive victory in target. They are up in fourth place, right below the three undefeated leaders, on 8 and 3-1.

Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza will try to stay unbeaten as they visit Sonepar Padova Padua on Sunday at 17:00 (16:00). They are second in the table, separated from Trentino only on point ratio. Their hosts from Padua are in seventh place on 6 and 2-2.

Fifth-placed Cucine Lube Civitanova, also on 6 and 2-2, will entertain winless Cisterna Volley, who are at the bottom of the standings on 1 point.

The other winless team, rookies Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina, who are just above them, in 11th place, on 2 points, will take a trip to Gioiella Prisma Taranto for the fifth leg opener on Saturday evening at 18:00 (16:00). Prisma are ninth on 3 and 1-3.

The SuperLega weekend will close with Sunday evening’s fixture between eighth-placed Valsa Group Modena (3, 1-3) and last season’s runners-up, 10th-placed Mint Vero Volley Monza (2, 1-3), starting at 19:00 (18:00).
