Itas Trentino Trento v Cucine Lube Civitanova

It will be the fourth time in history Itas Trentino Trento and Cucine Lube Civitanova lock horns in the SuperLega final. In 2012 and 2017, Lube emerged victorious with the titles. Two years ago, in 2023, Trentino celebrated as champions.

Trentino are now aiming at their sixth national championship crown, after topping the podiums in 2008, 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2023. They have also collected four silver medals – in 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2017 – so the last two times they lost the final, it was at the hands of Lube. This season, the reigning European champions and FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship silver medalists took the first place in the regular season in a last-minute turnaround. They topped the standings on 57 points and a 20-2 win-loss record, separated from Sir Susa Vim Perugia by a slight difference in the set ratios. Then, Trentino outlasted Cisterna Volley in the quarterfinals by 3-1 in wins, and went on to overcome Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza in the semifinals by 3-0 in wins.

Lube have so far collected seven national titles – in 2006, 2012, 2014, 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2022. They have settled for silver twice – in 2018 and 2023. Their last unsuccessful final was the one against Trentino two years ago. By winning the Coppa Italia trophy earlier this year, the team from Civitanova Marche has already exceeded the stated goals for their young squad at the start of the season and now they are also in the final championship series. They finished the regular season in third place on 46 and 14-8 and went on to defeat Allianz Milan by 3-1 in wins in the quarterfinals. Against defending champions and heavy favorites Sir Susa Vim Perugia, Lube produced a heroic feat, coming back from two wins behind to emerge victorious by 3-2 in wins in their semifinal series.

The long-lasting rivalry between Trentino and Lube has already produced 103 duels between the two clubs, with Lube enjoying a positive balance of 56-47 in wins. They have already met four times this season alone, alternating on the winning end. In December, Lube beat Trentino in four sets in a SuperLega home match, but a few days later, Trentino shut them out in a Club World Championship semifinal. In January’s Coppa Italia semifinal, the team from Civitanova squeezed out a tight 3-2 victory, and in February’s SuperLega encounter, the squad from Trento put together a 3-1 home win.

“It will be wonderful to play a championship final again, against Civitanova again, and to start it right in front of our fans. We know the value of our opponent and the individual players well, we respect each other a lot and I think it will be a battle. Cucine Lube will inevitably arrive very charged, but we will be charged too, because we will be able to count immediately on the support of our fans, who have already guaranteed us a sold-out game one. We know well what it means to play in front of a crowd like that.” Riccardo Sbertoli, setter and captain of Itas Trentino Trento
“We lost our last championship final in game five in Trento. I was there and it is clear that now I will fight for a different ending. We want to win without hesitation. We know that Itas is having an excellent season and gave a demonstration of strength in the semifinals by closing the matter in three games, reminding us why they won the regular season. It will be a difficult series, but both teams will have their chances to win. Whoever plays better will win the championship. Compared to Trento, we did not have much time to recover, but we are playing for the title and, therefore, we will only think about giving everything to win!” Barthelemy Chinenyeze, middle blocker of Cucine Lube Civitanova
Fifth-place playoffs

The last leg in the round-robin phase of the fifth-place playoffs will also be played on Sunday, with two teams - Valsa Group Modena and Rana Verona – already qualified for the semifinals and two vacancies still up for grabs with all of the remaining four participants still in contention.

Valsa Group Modena, the leaders of the current standings on 9 points and a 3-1 win-loss record, will host Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina, who trail bottom in sixth place on 3 and 1-3 and face a must-win situation, at 17:30 (15:30).

At the same time, second-placed Rana Verona, also on 9 and 3-1, will visit Sonepar Padova Padua, who are in fifth place on 4 and 1-3 and also in a must-win situation.

Two hours later, at 19:30 (17:30), third-placed Allianz Milan (6, 2-2) will entertain fourth-placed Cisterna Volley (5, 2-2). The winners of that match are certain to book a spot in the semifinals, but it is possible that the losers also advance.
