With three teams jammed within two points at the bottom of the table and a fourth just another two points above, with only three or four games per team to play through the end of the regular season, the race for survival in the Italian men’s SuperLega Credem Banca will continue to be the hottest item on the menu this weekend, as the matches of the 20th leg are played on Saturday and Sunday.

Right now, last year’s silver medallists Mint Vero Volley Monza occupy the single relegation spot in the current standings. They are in 12th place on 13 points and a 5-14 win-loss record. In one of the opening matches of the upcoming SuperLega weekend, on Saturday, February 15, at 19:30 local time (18:30 UTC), Vero Volley will host the team they overcame in last season’s semifinals to reach their historic achievement. However, Itas Trentino Trento will be an even tougher challenge now. They are the reigning European champions and the silver medallists of December’s FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship, and currently take second place in the table on 45 and 16-2 with a game in hand. Last season, Vero Volley came back from losing the first two matches of the semifinal playoff against Trentino to win the next three and progress to the final. This season, the two teams met twice, once in the SuperLega and once in a Supercoppa Italiana semifinal, and the squad from Trento shut out their opponents from Monza on both occasions.

Gioiella Prisma Taranto, the team right above Vero Volley in the standings, in 11th place on 14 and 4-15, also face a tough challenge this weekend. In the leg’s closing match on Sunday at 20:30 (19:30), they will visit trending Cucine Lube Civitanova at the Eurosuole Forum. Lube are running third in the table on 39 and 12-6 with a game in hand. When the two squads met in Taranto in November, they put up a five-set battle with Prisma mounting a victorious comeback from two sets down to win the game. It was their first ever success against the club from Civitanova.

“It will be a tough match. We're facing the third in the championship and winner of the Coppa Italia, but no result seems out of the question. The history of this championship to date says that Civitanova is unbeatable at home, so we have to try to do something unique up to now and we have the desire to try. We have to do what we haven't done away from home, and we are eager to go and play a great game. I hope that the importance of the SuperLega value is well understood not only by those who come to the sports hall, but by the whole city.” Dante Boninfante, head coach of Gioiella Prisma Taranto

Sonepar Padova Padua stand right above Prisma in the table. They are in 10th place on 15 and 4-14. In addition to being above the other “candidates” for relegation, Padova have a game in hand as another advantage. That game, however, to be played on Thursday of next week, is also against mighty Lube. Before that, they will entertain Valsa Group Modena at the Kioene Arena on Sunday at 16:00 (15:00). Padova will try to put an end to their negative streak of five consecutive losses, while Modena will be looking to build upon last week’s win over Lube to consolidate their spot in the playoffs, which has not been secured just yet. They are in seventh place on 22 and 7-12. In November, Modena beat Padova at home by 3-1.

“We know how important these last four games are. We have to make up ground, starting with Modena, and take advantage of every opportunity to get points. We are preparing with great determination. These are the decisive games, the ones that can make the difference and the boys are working hard to be ready. We will have to perform with great courage, determination and patience in difficult moments. The team’s morale is high. Playing at home can give us extra help. With the support of our fans, we will be able to express our game at our best and try to achieve a positive result.” Jacopo Cuttini, head coach of Sonepar Padova Padua

SuperLega rookies Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina need to pay double attention as they travel to Cisterna Volley on Saturday. On one hand, if they win, they will get closer to the opponent in the table and to a historic advancement to the playoffs, but on the other, if they lose, they will intensify the threat of falling back down dangerously close to the bottom of the table. The two opponents, who will meet at 20:30 (19:30), are placed on both sides of the cut-off line for the playoffs. Riding the momentum of a three-match winning streak (each win taken after a five-set battle), Cisterna are eighth on 21 and 8-10 (with a game in hand), while Grottazolina are ninth on 17 and 5-14. November’s match between them in Grottazolina went 3-1 Cisterna’s way.

The top half of the table, where the race is for a better placement in the playoff bracket, will also offer a couple of interesting matches on Sunday.

At 16:00 (15:00), fourth-placed Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza (36, 12-7) will host fifth-placed Rana Verona (33, 11-8). Verona have won both of their encounters this season, 3-0 in the SuperLega and 3-2 in Coppa Italia, and if they take the three points on Sunday, they will surpass Gas Sales to the fourth place in the table.

Defending champions Sir Susa Vim Perugia will have a home game against Allianz Milan on Sunday at 18:00 (17:00). Sir lead the SuperLega pack on 48 and 17-2, while last year’s bronze medallists are in sixth place on 33 and 11-8, behind Verona only on set ratio. The Block Devils won November’s game in Milan by 3-1.
