The 80th edition of the Italian men’s volleyball championship is about to get underway this weekend. The 2024-2025 SuperLega Credem Banca season starts with its opening game on Saturday, with the rest of the first-leg matches set to take place on Sunday.

The season opener

The rejuvenated squad of Cucine Lube Civitanova will welcome Sonepar Padova to the Eurosuole Forum on Saturday, September 28, at 20:30 local time (18:30 UTC), to get the most impatient volleyball fans in front of their VBTV screens for the SuperLega season opener. Lube have won 48 of the previous 57 encounters with their opponents, but in their most recent meeting in April, in the 2024 fifth-place playoffs, the squad from Padua delivered a straight-set victory.

One of the highlights of Saturday’s game could be the clash between two 20-year-old talents and teammates on the way to abundant success with Italy’s age-category national selections, Sonepar’s outside hitter Luca Porro, who will start his second season with the club, and setter Mattia Boninfante, who is expected to make his official debut in the Lube jersey, both seen as part of the bright future of Italian volleyball. Both sides, however, will also have plenty of more experienced athletes to lead their teams as the new season starts, with Serbian middle blocker Marko Podrascanin, Italian libero Fabio Balaso and French Olympic champions Barthelemy Chinenyeze among the names, who stand out on Lube’s roster, and the likes of Italian setter Marco Falaschi, Dutch middle Fabian Plak and Croatian outside Marko Sedlacek leading the way on Sonepar’s side.

“It will be an interesting match, tough like every season’s starter. We will have to take to the court with the right mindset. We arrive ready to go, thanks to the great work done in an excellent pre-season, and we will remain focused.” Fabio Balaso, libero and captain of Cucine Lube Civitanova
“After a long and intense preparation, the boys couldn't wait to get on the court for a real match. We will play against one of the top teams and we know that the start will not be easy. It will be difficult, but I see that the guys have the right mentality.” Jacopo Cuttini, head coach of Sonepar Padua
Gas Sales against Modena in first weekend’s highlight

Sunday’s programme will open at 16:00 (14:00) with a game between Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza and Valsa Group Modena, which has the potential of being the most interesting match of the weekend, as both sides boast stellar consolations of players on their rosters. The home fans in Piacenza will be able to cheer on the likes of Olympic champion setter Antoine Brizard of France, outside hitters Uros Kovacevic of Serbia and Stephen Maar of Canada, middle blocker Robertlandy Simon of Cuba as well as Italy’s Yuri Romano, Gianluca Galassi, Fabio Ricci and Leonardo Scanferla, among others. The visitors from Modena will be led by their new playmaker, iconic Argentinean setter Luciano De Cecco, and will feature some established players like Simone Anzani, Dragan Stankovic, Jacopo Massari and Austrian opposite Paul Bucchegger, as well as rising stars like Uladzislau Davyskiba of Belarus, Jose Gutierrez of Cuba or home-grown Tommaso Rinaldi.

“The SuperLega is almost here! We are preparing well and the goal is to start the new season on the right foot. We are excited and we can't wait to get started. We have to start strong and face Piacenza in the best possible way. It's a dream to wear the Modena jersey, I feel good here and I have to give my all in every training session and match to grow and improve both from a personal and collective point of view.” Jose Gutierrez, outside hitter of Valsa Group Modena
Whom will last season’s standouts start against?

Another four matches will be played on Sunday. Defending SuperLega champions Sir Susa Vim Perugia, also reigning club world champions and holders of Italy’s national cup and national super cup, will open the defence of their title with a home game against Rana Verona. A week after opening their season with yet another Supercoppa triumph, the Block Devils will entertain their first SuperLega opponents on Sunday at 17:30 (15:30).

Itas Trentino Trento, the team that won the 2023-2024 regular season convincingly and the 2023-2024 CEV Champions League crown, and stopped just short of winning last week’s Supercoppa final by losing to Sir in the tie-breaker, will start the new SuperLega championship with an away game at Cisterna Volley at 18:00 (16:00).

2024 silver medallists Mint Vero Volley Monza will close the first-leg weekend with a visit to promoted newcomers Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina at 19:00 (17:00). Bronze medallists Allianz Milan will also travel this weekend, playing at Gioiella Prisma Taranto at 17:00 (15:00).
