Gas Sales v Trentino (source: legavolley.it)

Just a week after suffering their first defeat of the season, Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza face another challenging obstacle this weekend, as the matches of the eighth leg in the Italian men’s SuperLega Credem Banca regular season unfold. Having dropped to third place in the table, Gas Sales will now take on second-placed Itas Trentino Trento.

Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza will welcome the reigning European club champions to the Pala Banca Sport on Sunday at 15:30 local time (14:30 UTC). Each of the two teams is on a 6-1 win-loss record, but Itas Trentino Trento are a point ahead of their hosts in the current standings, 18 against 17. So if Gas Sales win this match, they will surpass their opponents in the table. Otherwise, the gap between them will be widened. Trentino lead the head-to-head series with 15 wins against six for the club from Piacenza. Last season they won both encounters during the regular season by 3-1.

“Sooner or later a defeat had to come, but I personally always see the glass half full. I think that our loss added even more spice to our season. Now we have to get back to work in the gym. We know how to play at an excellent level, so let's get back to work. The defeat in Civitanova could be very useful for the future. Now let's start focusing on the home game against Trento.” Gianluca Galassi, middle blocker of Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza

Later on Sunday, in the leg’s closing match at 18:00 (17:00), Cucine Lube Civitanova will try to keep up their perfect home record this season as they host Valsa Group Modena. Lube are in fourth place on 13 points and a 4-3 win-loss record and have a good shot at narrowing the distance from the top three, if they overcome their visitors again. Modena are in eighth place on 9 and 3-4.

Seventh-placed Sonepar Padova Padua will entertain table neighbours Allianz Milan on Sunday at 17:00 (16:00). Padova are on 10 and 3-4, two points below Allianz. Last season’s bronze medallists are sixth on 12 and 4-4.

“We started the championship with a good pace and we are growing week after week. Playing at home is a fundamental factor for us, because in front of our fans we are able to give our best and have fun. Milan will be a difficult opponent, but we will enter the court with the same fighting spirit that allowed us to win against Monza.” Mattia Orioli, outside hitter of Sonepar Padova Padua

It will also be interesting to see if last season’s runners-up Mint Vero Volley Monza will start climbing up out of the unexpected situation they are in – second from the bottom, in 11th place on 4 and 2-5 – as they host Rana Verona on Sunday at 17:00 (16:00). The visitors, on the other hand, will try to put an end to their two-game losing streak, which caused them a drop to fifth place on 12 and 4-3.

The eighth leg’s programme also offers two games on Saturday. The SuperLega weekend will open at 19:30 (18:30) with a game between top-placed Sir Susa Vim Perugia and bottom-placed Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina. The defending champions lead the table on 19 and 7-0, while the SuperLega rookies trail in 12th place on 2 and 0-7.

Also on Saturday, at 20:30 (19:30), 10th-placed Cisterna Volley (6, 2-6) will entertain ninth-placed Gioiella Prisma Taranto (7, 2-5) in an attempt to surpass them in the table.
