In his fourth Olympics, De Cecco will carry the Argentinean flag during the Opening Ceremony

One of the last men’s national teams to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics, Argentina were among the first ones to confirm their squads for the event, announcing the 13 players that will represent the country in a few weeks on Wednesday – head coach Marcelo Mendez still has to make a decision about which of them will be entered as an alternate.

One of the team’s main stars, setter and captain Luciano De Cecco received another great news on Wednesday as the Argentinean Olympic Committee revealed he was selected among 135 athletes qualified for Paris 2024 to be the country’s flag bearer in the Games’ Opening Ceremony alongside field hockey player Rocío Sanchez.

The 36-year-old De Cecco is one of eight bronze medalists from the Tokyo Olympics to return in Paris 2024 alongside fellow setter Matías Sanchez, opposite Bruno Lima, outside hitters Ezequiel Palacios and Facundo Conte, middle blockers Agustín Loser and Martín Ramos and libero Santiago Danani.

Also present at the Rio 2016 and London 2012 Games, De Cecco and Conte are heading into their fourth Olympic appearances and are the most experienced athletes in the squad.

Playing at the Olympics for the first time will be opposite Pablo Kukartsev, outside hitters Jan Martínez, Luciano Palonsky, Luciano Vicentín and middle blocker Nicolás Zerba.

First match against the United States

The squad will travel to France on July 13 to finish their preparations ahead of their debut in the Games, on July 27, against the United States, at 21:00 local time (19:00 GMT). The South Americans will also face Japan and Germany in their Pool C matches at the South Paris Arena. The four national teams were the first to announce their squads for Paris 2024.
