German captain Grozer will be the only opposite in the squad

After the United States and Japan, Germany became the third volleyball men’s national team to announce its squad for the Paris 2024 Olympics as head coach Michal Winiarski revealed the 13 players who will make the trip to the French capital in less than a month.

Highlighting Winiarski’s selection is 39-year-old opposite György Grozer, who played a major role in the German qualification for the Games and will be the only player in the position in the country’s Olympic roster.

“We have just one opposite, but (outside hitter) Moritz Karlitzek can also play the position,” Winiarski explained. “We have an exceptional opposite in Grozer, but I also like the idea of using an outside hitter there because it allows us to play a different style.”

Grozer and 37-year-old setter Lukas Kampa are the only players with Olympic experience in the German squad as they were both present in their last appearance at the Games, in London 2012.

Despite that, the Germans will have somewhat of an experienced roster making the trip to Paris as eight of the 13 players selected, including alternate Jan Zimmermann, have more than 100 matches with the country’s national team.

“During the VNL, we made some experiences and gave everyone the opportunity to play and show their importance to the team,” Winiarski added. “And these players proved to be the best options for our national team.”

Germany were drawn into Pool C at the Paris Olympics and will face Japan, the USA and Argentina in their first matches in the tournament held at the South Paris Arena, from July 27 to August 10.
