Sir’s Simone Giannelli in action against Rana Verona

The second half of the Italian men’s SuperLega Credem Banca regular season starts already on Friday with a big clash at the bottom of the table. Another three 12th-leg matches will be played on Sunday, with Rana Verona hosting reigning club world champions, defending Italian champions and SuperLega table leaders Sir Susa Vim Perugia in the programme’s highlight.

Rana Verona have been on a three-game winning streak, which lifted them to fourth place in the current standings on 21 points and a 7-4 win-loss record. Their visitors, on the other hand, are still undefeated this season and lead the table on 30 and 11-0. Sunday’s match between the two teams at the Pala Agsm AIM starts at 18:00 local time (17:00 UTC) and it will be Sir Susa Vim Perugia’s last match in the role of reigning 2023 club world champions, as later that day a new world champion will emerge in Uberlandia. Additionally, the Block Devils will be inspired by the news that their head coach Angelo Lorenzetti has extended his contract with the club until 2027.

It will be the 42nd encounter between the two clubs. The head-to-head record is heavily tilted Sir’s way, with 34 wins against just seven for Verona. The team from Perugia has won the four most recent meetings, while Verona’s latest success against Sir dates back to February of this year, when they managed a five-set victory on the road. In this season’s first-leg match, the Block Devils beat their visitors from Verona in straight sets.

“We know that we can do better, we want to do better and we will do better. Our balance is certainly positive. When you get to the end of the first half of the season without having ever lost a match, only positive things are said. In reality, in all victories there are always aspects to improve and we have many. We are workers and we have always done it, every week. Beyond the victories, we have always returned to the gym with the desire to improve and, in my opinion, we must carry this aspect forward into the coming weeks, also learning to play when we are a little behind without ever losing our smile. This is my wish for the next matches.” Simone Giannelli, setter and captain of Sir Susa Vim Perugia

The second half of the regular season will get underway on Friday evening at 20:00 (19:00) with Mint Vero Volley Monza welcoming Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina in a battle between the bottom two teams in the standings. Last season’s runners-up Vero Volley now stand second from the bottom, in 11th place on 7 and 3-8, while SuperLega rookies Grottazzolina are still looking for their first top-division win and trail bottom on 2 and 0-11.

Sunday’s programme will open at 16:00 (15:00) with a game between Allianz Milan and Gioiella Prisma Taranto. Last season’s bronze medallists are currently in sixth place on 18 and 6-5, while their visitors from Taranto are situated just above Vero Volley, in 10th place on 10 and 3-8.

In the weekend’s closing match, Valsa Group Modena will entertain Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza at 20:30 (19:30). Modena are eighth in the table on 14 and 5-6, while Gas Sales have lost four of their five most recent matches, which has pushed them down to fifth place on 21 and 7-4, and lower set ratio than Rana Verona.

The remaining two fixtures of the 12th leg – Itas Trentino Trento v Cisterna Volley and Sonepar Padova Padua v Cucine Lube Civitanova – have been postponed to a later date yet to be determined because of Trentino and Lube’s participation in the ongoing FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship in Brazil.
