But before facing each other in a 10th-leg fixture on Sunday, Trentino and Lube will hit the courts on Wednesday to play their 11th-leg matches in advance. This week’s SuperLega programme offers a total of seven games.

On Wednesday at 20:30 local time (19:30 UTC), reigning European champions Itas Trentino Trento will host Sonepar Padova Padua. Trentino are running second in the current standings on 24 points and an 8-1 win-loss record, one point below undefeated leaders Sir Susa Vim Perugia. Their opponents from Padua, on the other hand, are two points below the cut-off for Coppa Italia qualification, in ninth place on 10 and 3-6.

“We face the last home match of our first half of the season knowing full well how important it is. It represents a decisive piece in the series of close appointments that we are experiencing in this period. We will therefore go in search of another important result for the standings and, at the same time, we will try to further improve the pace of play also in view of a busy December.” Fabio Soli, head coach of Itas Trentino Trento

At the same time on Wednesday evening, the first edition of the local Marche region derby will take place as SuperLega rookies Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina welcome Cucine Lube Civitanova to the Pala Savelli. Lube stand fourth in the table on 17 and 5-4, while Grottazzolina are still looking for a historic first win in Italy’s top division, while trailing bottom in 12th place on 2 and 0-9.

“A very important and difficult match awaits us, especially after the incredible match in Taranto. We are missing the first away win in the SuperLega and we want to get it in the derby. This challenge has the potential to be complicated, but we have to step up the level.” Romano Giannini, assistant coach of Cucine Lube Civitanova

And then the big clash between Cucine Lube Civitanova and Itas Trentino Trento is set to start at 18:00 (17:00) on Sunday at the Eurosuole Forum offering the two sides a great opportunity to measure up against each other before beginning their quests for the club world title.

There has been a long-running rivalry between the two clubs and they have met many times in domestic, continental and even world competitions. This week they will reach a remarkable milestone, engaging in their 100th encounter. So far, Lube lead the series by 54-45 in wins. The last times they met, it was in March’s CEV Champions League semifinals, when Trentino won in four sets at home and then lost in five on the road to advance to the final on their way to the continental crown. Trentino also won both of their SuperLega meetings last season.

The 10th leg of the SuperLega season already started in advance 20 days ago, when Allianz Milan took a four-set home victory over Cisterna Volley.

Action will resume on Saturday, November 30, with Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza entertaining Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina at 18:00 (17:00). Gas Sales are certainly hoping to put an end to their three-match losing streak that had them drop down from undefeated leader to the third place on 17 and 6-3.

Sunday’s programme will offer three more games, starting with a remake of last season’s final between Mint Vero Volley Monza and Sir Susa Vim Perugia at 16:00 (15:00). While defending champions Sir continue their victorious run and occupy the first place in the standings on 25 and 9-0, Vero Volley, who finished second last season, are now running second from the bottom, in 11th place on 7 and 3-6.

At the same starting time, Gioiella Prisma Taranto host Valsa Group Modena in a match that could prove very important in the race for the Coppa Italia quarterfinal berths. Modena are currently in a qualifying position, seventh place on 12 and 4-5, but Prisma are just three points behind, in 10th place on 9 and 3-6.

Sonepar Padova Padua and Rana Verona will close the SuperLega week with a game at the Kioene Arena starting at 20:30 (19:30). For the hosts from Padua, it will be the last match of the first half of the regular season and could present them with the last opportunity to fight for Coppa Italia qualification. Meanwhile, Verona, who are currently fifth on 15 and 5-4, might have already booked their quarterfinal spot by then, depending on other results earlier this week, but will be looking to overtake or stay close behind Gas Sales and Lube in the table.
