Gioiella Prisma Taranto players ready for battle

This week, Italian men’s SuperLega Credem Banca action will start early. The weekend will begin on Friday with a game that could prove crucial to the race for the last vacancy in the Coppa Italia quarterfinals, and will end with another three games on Sunday to complete the first half of the regular season.

The top eight in the SuperLega standings after the end of the 11th leg will qualify for the national cup quarterfinals. Seven of those berths have already been booked. One is still up for grabs, with Cisterna Volley and Gioiella Prisma Taranto the only two candidates for it. Cisterna are currently holding the eighth place on 12 points and a 4-6 win-loss record. Ninth-placed Sonepar Padova Padua have already played their 11th-leg match, so they can no longer move up in the race for Coppa Italia. However, 10th-placed Prisma stand on 10 points and a 3-7 win-loss record and still hold a shot at the eighth place, but they are in a must-win situation as they visit Rana Verona on Friday.

Rana Verona and Gioiella Prisma Taranto will open the SuperLega weekend at 20:00 local time (19:00 UTC) on Friday. If the visitors do not take the three points, the race for the last Coppa Italia vacancy is over and the spot goes to Cisterna. Having in mind the opponents’ qualities and position in the table, Prisma’s task appears very challenging. Verona are in fifth place on 18 and 6-4 and will be keen to win that match for a chance to climb to the fourth place and gain a home-court advantage for the cup quarterfinals.

“It will be another nice and complicated challenge. Verona are a team that has certainly grown a lot these years with excellent planning and good work, a strong team that has the possibility of arriving in the top four places at the end of the regular season. Serving is one of Verona’s strong points and they have good attackers, so we will have to try to play a very careful and sacrificial match.” Dante Boninfante, head coach of Gioiella Prisma Taranto

If Prisma do collect the three points on Friday, then Cisterna Volley will need to earn at least one, i.e. win at least two sets, when they host Mint Vero Volley Monza on Sunday at 18:00 (17:00). Last season’s silver medallists have been struggling to get up to speed this season and will certainly be looking at their trip to Cisterna as an opportunity to improve their situation. They are now second from the bottom, in 11th place on 7 and 3-7.

Outside the race for Coppa Italia, Sunday’s match between Sir Susa Vim Perugia and Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza is certainly the most interesting this weekend. Defending champions Sir are still undefeated and lead the table on 28 and 10-0, hoping to widen the one-point gap from second-placed Itas Trentino Trento, who have already played their 11th-leg game. Their visitors from Piacenza, on the other hand, will surpass third-placed Cucine Lube Civitanova, if they take home the three points from Perugia. However, if they lose, they are running the risk of themselves being surpassed by Verona. Gas Sales are currently fourth on 20 and 7-3.

The historic head-to-head record between the two clubs stands at 11-2 Sir’s way. They last met in a Supercoppa Italiana semifinal in September, when the team from Perugia celebrated a 3-1 victory and went on to claim the trophy. The upcoming match this Sunday is scheduled at 15:30 (14:30).

“We are playing with Perugia for a place on the grid of the Coppa Italia. We will face one of the strongest teams in the world at the moment, but we must be strong in the head and work on our weaknesses to be able to arrive ready to face the match on equal terms. We are charged and ready to go and play a good match and show that we are competitive even against the top of the class.” Robertlandy Simon, middle blocker of Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza

Finally, the first half of the season will come to an end with a game between Valsa Group Modena and Allianz Milan, set to get underway at 19:00 (18:00) on Sunday evening. The two teams are neighbours in the table with a possibility of switching positions. The visitors from Milan are in sixth place on 15 and 5-5, just above their hosts, who are seventh on 14 and 5-5, so they will be battling for what presumably will be an easier Coppa Italia opponent.
