Italy made history by qualifying to their first Olympic semifinals

Italy's long-awaited first medal in the women's volleyball tournament of the Olympics is now just one win away as the Europeans topped continental rivals Serbia on Tuesday, in the fourth and last quarterfinal of the Paris 2024 Games, to advance to the semifinals for the first time in history.

Crowned as the winners of the Volleyball Nations League 2024 just over a month ago, the Italians had a tremendous display against the world champions at the South Paris Arena 1, recovering from an inconsistent start to take control of the match and win 3-0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-20).

In Paris, the Italians are competing at the Olympics for the seventh time and after stopping in the quarterfinals in four of their first six attempts, they have now finally made it to the medal rounds. The Serbians, on the other hand, will watch the dispute for spots in the podium from the outside for the first time since London 2012.

Paris 2024 – Match Schedule and Results

The Italians will face European champions Türkiye in the semifinals on Thursday, at 20:00 local time (18:00 GMT). Qualified to meet in the other semifinal, Brazil and the United States will play earlier, at 16:00 local time (14:00 GMT).

Italians and Turkish already met in Paris, on Sunday, in pool play, when Italy prevailed in straight sets.

"We're so excited to have taken Italy to the semifinals for the first time," setter Alessia Orro celebrated. "It's a big emotion for all of us, but now we have to think about the match that's ahead of us. We know it won't be anything like the one in pool play. Türkiye will be super motivated and determined to win and make it to the final, so we'll need to be ready to fight until the last point. We're getting better at every match, but I still believe there's room for us to improve."

The quarterfinal victory also kept Italy as the top team in the FIVB World Ranking with 419.62 points - they would have been passed by Brazil had they lost the match. The Serbians went down two spots, now appearing in tenth place with 280.42.

The battle between high-scoring opposites Paola Egonu and Tijana Bošković was one of the main attractions of the match and the two stars ended the encounter level, with 19 points each - Egonu had 17 kills, one block and one ace, while Bošković registered 18 kills and one ace.

Besides Egonu, Italy also counted on seven points from outside hitter Caterina Bosetti and six from middle blockers Sarah Fahr and Anna Danesi and outside hitter Myriam Sylla to take the win.

"We played a very good match as a team," Sylla reflected. "Maybe in some moments we weren't playing our best volleyball, but we stuck together and pushed through it. Serbia started really aggressive, wanting to impose their game, and coming back against them is not easy. But we did a great job, supporting each other the entire time."

On the Serbian side, outside hitters Bianka Buša and Aleksandra Uzelac, with eight and seven points respectively, were the other key contributors.

After the match, Serbian captain Maja Ognjenović announced her retirement from the national team after 20 years and five Olympics on the day of her 40th birthday.

"It has been a long journey for me," she commented. "To think that I started to play for the national team in 2004, so it has been 20 years. There have been different emotions, lots of ups and downs and some unforgettable moments. It has been a part of my life that I've really liked, but now it is time for something different."

The higher number of Serbian errors (25 to 16) proved crucial, as, despite the setback, the world champions got more points in kills (42 to 39). Italy had three more blocks (seven to two) and one more ace (five to four).
