Aleksandar Nikolov in attack (source: legavolley.it)

There was a bit of good news for Cucine Lube Civitanova from last weekend’s SuperLega Credem Banca game in Italy, in which they suffered a heavy shutout on the road at Allianz Milan. One of Lube’s most important players, Bulgarian star Aleksandar Nikolov, finally returned to action after a long absence due to medical reasons.

The 21-year-old outside hitter appeared on the court during the first set of the match. It was a brief appearance, but it was a happy and very important step on his patient journey to full recovery.

“Aside from the result of the trip to Milan, from a personal point of view, I am very happy because after months without official matches, I have broken the abstinence and stepped on the floor, finally taking part in my first action of the new season in the Lube jersey,” 2.06m-tall Nikolov told lubevolley.it. “Now the plan is to take it step by step. Everything will return to normal, but slow and steady wins the race!”

Nikolov’s last official match action was on April 17, in a SuperLega fifth-place playoff match with Lube, after which he had to devote his time to healing his herniated disc. The attempts to do so without surgery unfortunately failed and he underwent a successful operation in June. The talented athlete missed not only Lube’s last two matches of the 2023-2024 season, in which the team stopped just short of qualifying for the European Cups, but also the entire national team season with Bulgaria.

Whether or not the fans in Civitanova will get to cheer Nikolov in action in Lube’s next game against Mint Vero Volley Monza at home on Sunday remains to be seen, but the young striker seems to have the recipe for success.

“We will have to be much more aggressive at home against Monza. Mint Vero Volley are a rival that has often put us in serious difficulty and on our part we will need much more determination to try to win,” he commented. “We will have to give away little and avoid the match getting longer.”
