Swehly Misrata bring first Arab Club Championship gold to Libya after 46 years

Swehly Misrata achieved a historic success on Wednesday, bringing home their first men’s volleyball Arab Club Championship title. The victory was also Libya’s first in 46 years, since 1978, when the country hosted the very first edition of the tournament and the team of Al Tarsana Tripoli claimed the first trophy.

In the final of the 42nd edition of the annual Championship, held in the Jordanian capital Amman, Swehly Misrata celebrated a 3-1 (25-21, 25-22, 22-25, 25-20) victory over Qatar Doha, thus rounding off the club’s tenth attempt at winning the tournament since 1999 with the coveted title.

The third-place match was resolved in straight sets. Another team from Qatar, Police Doha, completed the podium after defeating Oman’s Seeb by a convincing 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-20) to snatch the bronze.

Swehly’s 33-year-old Belarusian outside hitter Andrey Radziuk was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament. Another seven players were recognised on the competition’s Dream Team: setter Abdul Rahman Daghdna (Swehly), opposite Henry Omar Tapia (Swehly), outside hitters Abdussalam Berrous (Swehly) and Denis Kochnev (Qatar), middle blockers Saud Al Maamari (Seeb) and Papemaguette Diagne (Qatar), and libero Naji Mahmoud (Police).
