Perusic/Schweiner (CZE) vs. Hörl/Horst (AUT) - Pool E #18334530

David Schweiner spikes past the block of Julian Horl

Reigning world champions Ondrej Perusic & David Schweiner secured their second straight-set win at the men’s Olympic beach volleyball tournament on Wednesday morning at the Eiffel Tower Stadium in Paris, thus booking a spot in the elimination rounds. Later in the evening, Brazil’s Evandro Oliveira & Arthur Mariano swept their match against Canada’s Samuel Schachter & Daniel Dearing and together with the Czech duo both secured advancement to the eighthfinals.

After shutting out Schachter & Dearing on Sunday, the fifth-seeded Czechs produced a 2-0 (21-18, 21-13) sweep of their encounter with Austria’s Julian Horl & Alexander Horst, seeded 17th. Schweiner put away 16 kills in attack, one kill block and one ace towards a match-high 18-point tally, while Perusic aced three times and finished with 12 points.

“I think we are still getting used to it a little bit, because the atmosphere at this stadium is completely different from anything that we have ever experienced,” 29-year-old Perusic told the FIVB after the match. “I think, if you watch all the matches, it is kind of clear that all the teams are still trying to somehow adjust their game to the stadium, to the different orientation in space when you are on the court. I am really glad that we were able to win the first two matches, because despite the fact that they came in straight sets, none of them was easy. These are two very dangerous teams who have proven their high quality. I am really glad that this gives us a great position for the rest of the tournament. Now let’s see what we come up with against the Brazilians.”

Paris 2024 is the second Olympics for Perusic & Schweiner. Because of positive coronavirus tests before the Games in Tokyo three years ago, they were forced to forfeit their first match in the Japanese capital and although they won one of the next two games in pool, they failed to advance in the tournament.

“This is the first real Olympics for us – living in the Village, practicing here, playing in front of a full stadium at one of the most beautiful places in the city - this is completely different, if you compare it to Tokyo,” Perusic said. “Playing wise, of course, we are glad that we have already achieved better results. We are really enjoying it and I am really happy that we were able to perform, because we haven’t performed very well this year. We were struggling a bit, but now it at least looks like we are able to play in a decent way, and I hope we get even better for the coming matches.”

Ondrej Perusic hails the full stadium

Perusic & Schweiner are carrying the aura of the reigning world champions, but they don’t think this special status gives them any advantage at Paris 2024 or makes them favourites in any way.

“Since the World Champs we haven’t been performing at our best,” 30-year-old Schweiner said. “This season it’s quite clear that there is Sweden, there is Norway, even though they had to deal with some injuries. But for sure, it gave us security that we were qualified for the Olympics quite early and we could prepare better for this event. Let’s see if it pays off or not.”

In the evening, eighth-seeded Evandro & Arthur mastered a 2-0 (21-13, 21-16) victory over 20th-seeded Schachter & Dearing, which meant that both they and Perusic & Schweiner qualified directly to the eighthfinals. Arthur was the best scorer of that match with 28 points. The Czech and the Brazilian duos will go head to head for the first place in Pool E at 21:00 local time (19:00 UTC) on Friday.

“I am just looking forward to playing another match in this amazing atmosphere,” Schweiner added. “No matter what the weather is, it’s full anyway, so it would be amazing to play some more matches. To play all of them would be nice, but let’s see...”

Earlier on Friday, Horl & Horst will take on Schachter & Dearing in a direct duel for the third place in the pool to stay in contention.

The second leg in Pool B was also played on Wednesday. In the morning, 11th-seeded Steven van de Velde & Matthew Immers of the Netherlands celebrated their first win in the tournament, a 2-0 (21-19, 21-16) victory over Chile’s Marco Grimalt & Esteban Grimalt. While Van de Velde and Marco Grimalt impressed with five kill blocks each, Immers produced a match-high 20 points, all in attack. In the evening, reigning Olympic champions Anders Mol & Christian Sorum of Norway, seeded second in the Olympic bracket, mastered a 2-0 (21-12, 21-15) win over 14th-seeded Italians Alex Ranghieri & Adrian Carambula and remained the only unbeaten team in the pool. Sorum was the best scorer of the match with 18 points, one more than Mol, whose tally included four kill blocks and two aces.
