Carol and Barbara high five after their game-winning point against Lithuania

Carol and Bárbara high five after their victory over Lithuanians Paulikiene and Raupelyte

Getting results is the main priority for every athlete competing at the Olympics. Brazilians Bárbara Seixas and Carol Salgado are getting the wins they need to advance in the women’s beach volleyball tournament of the Paris 2024 Games, but they’re also having a lot of fun in the process.

On Tuesday, the 36-year-old veterans got their second-straight two-set victory at the Eiffel Tower Stadium, downing Lithuanians Monika Paulikiene and Aine Raupelyte 2-0 (21-13, 21-14) in Pool E to keep their record clean.

While they battled their opponents, the Brazilians also enjoyed themselves on the court, interacting with the fans that packed the stands and responded, and displaying excited smiles after each point scored.

“We have a lot of fun playing together and we love it,” Carol said. “We’re very different in terms of personality, but we have great respect for each other and when it comes to playing, everything is so natural between us that it makes things easier. We both like to play with good energy on the court and that connects us in a very special way. The magic that happens on the court, it’s so special. When we go out there, it’s playtime for us and here, in this incredible city and this amazing stadium, it’s even more fun.”

Against the Lithuanians, Bárbara and Carol again dominated their opponents and not even the intense heat that hit Paris on Tuesday was enough to slow them down or make their smiles less expressive.

“We’re used to playing in the heat, so it didn’t really bother us that much,” Bárbara, a Rio 2016 Olympic silver medalist, explained. “We definitely could feel it, but we thought that if we were feeling it, they certainly were feeling it even more. So we just tried to do things a little bit faster and use it as an advantage.”

The Brazilians, who defeated Japanese Miki Ishii and Akiko Hasegawa also in two sets in their debut on Sunday, have been extremely dominant and consistent at the Olympics so far. With their second victory in as many matches, they are guaranteed in the Round of 16 after Dutch Raisa Schoon and Katja Stam topped the Japanese on Tuesday 2-0 (21-16, 21-14).

Olympic Games Paris 2024 Beach Volleyball: schedule and results

They will complete their Pool E schedule against the Dutch, on Friday, at 17:00 local time (15:00 GMT), when the first place ahead of the playoffs will be in play.

“We’ve been very focused, especially in our own actions,” Bárbara added. “At the Olympics, the next match is always the most important one so we're trying to use our energy and aggressiveness to make sure the matches are played in the way we want. We were able to take advantage of the good runs we had and haven’t made a lot of errors and with that, we didn’t really give much of an opportunity for our opponents to try to find a way to beat us.”

Italians and Brazilians triumph in Pool A

Tuesday’s schedule at the Eiffel Tower Stadium also featured matches in Pool A and in the first of them, Italians Marta Menegatti and Valentina Gottardi secured their first victory in Paris, downing Egyptians Doaa Elghobashy and Marwa Abdelhady 2-0 (21-16, 21-10).

Later, Brazilians Eduarda ‘Duda’ Lisboa and Ana Patrícia Ramos continued undefeated thanks to a 2-0 (21-12, 21-13) victory over Spanish Liliana Fernández and Paula Soria. The South Americans are guaranteed in the Round of 16 with four points, one more than the Italians and Spanish and two more than the Egyptians.

Wednesday will be a busy day for the women at the Eiffel Tower Stadium with six matches - Switzerland's Nina Brunner/Tanja Hüberli vs. Germany's Laura Ludwig/Louisa Lippmann at 10:00 local time (8:00 GMT), Germany's Svenja Müller/Cinja Tillmann vs. Czechia's Barbora Hermannová/Marie-Sára Štochlova at 11:00 (9:00), Latvia's Tina Graudina/Anastasija Samoilova vs. Paraguay's Michelle Valiente/Giuliana Poletti at 12:00 (10:00), USA's Kelly Cheng/Sara Hughes vs. France's Clémence Vieira/Aline Chamereau at 15:00 (13:00), France's Lézana Placette/Alexia Richard vs. Spain's Daniela Álvarez/Tania Moreno at 17:00 (15:00) and Canada's Melissa Humana-Paredes/Brandie Wilkerson vs. Switzerland's Esmée Böbner/Zoé Vergé-Dépré at 21:00 (19:00).
