The Italian men’s SuperLega Credem Banca will keep its tradition to offer volleyball fans some exciting action on the day right after the southern European country celebrates Christmas. The six matches of the 14th leg of the regular season will be played on Thursday, December 26.

In one of the two matches that will open the competition day at 17:00 local time (16:00 UTC), hosts Mint Vero Volley Monza will try to put an end to their five-match losing streak in the SuperLega that pushed last season’s silver medallists down to the bottom of the current standings, in 12th place on 7 points and a 3-10 win-loss record. They will welcome Cucine Lube Civitanova, placed fourth on 26 and 8-4 and a game in hand.

“We come from a nice win in Milan despite the thermometer under our arm, with three athletes with the flu and not on the court - a success that gave us points and morale. Now we have to improve away from home, starting against a team that wants to climb up the standings and capitalize on the home court advantage.” Giampaolo Medei, head coach of Cucine Lube Civitanova

At the same starting time, Sonepar Padova Padua will host Gioiella Prisma Taranto. Both teams have losing streaks to stop. Padova have not been able to win any of their last five SuperLega games, while Prisma’s negative run accounts for four consecutive defeats. The two teams are neighbours in the table, level on 10 points and three wins each, with Padova edging ahead to ninth place on set ratio with a game in hand and leaving Prisma behind in 10th.

“Our two teams currently occupy the same position in the standings, and a victory would represent a major boost for the future. We must concentrate at the maximum. They are a solid team, with excellent serving and many solutions in attack. It will be essential to do a good job in defence and put pressure from the serving line, because if we serve well we can always get something more. This must be our focus.” Tim Held, outside hitter of Gioiella Prisma Taranto

The remaining four matches will start at 18:00 (17:00).

In a remake of last season’s third-place duel, Itas Trentino Trento will entertain bronze medallists Allianz Milan. The reigning European champions stand second in the table on 30 and 10-2, while their visitors from Milan arrive as the sixth-placed team on 21 and 7-6.

“We are happy to finally be able to return to play in front of our fans, especially for an important match like this one. Milan are coming off five victories in the last seven league games, they have a very important group of attackers and are very well organized in the blocking and defense phase. I am convinced that for us being able to work at our gym again and receiving the support and warmth of our fans will be fundamental for this commitment.” Fabio Soli, head coach of Itas Trentino Trento

Rana Verona will host rookies Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina, who are riding the momentum of two historic victories, their first ever in the SuperLega, that pulled them up from the bottom of the table to 11th place on 8 and 2-11. Verona are much closer to the top end of the standings, in fifth place on 25 and 8-5.

After being stunned at Grottazzolina last week, Valsa Group Modena will face a difficult task to recover as they visit the undefeated defending champions. Sir Susa Vim Perugia lead the standings on 35 and 13-0 and are quite unlikely to stumble, especially at home, but eighth-placed Modena (15, 5-8) must try as their place within the playoff zone may not be safe for much longer.

Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza, who are running third on 26 and 9-4, have a home game against Cisterna Volley. The visitors stand seventh on 15 and 5-7.
