Verona beat Lube in four sets at home in the fall

The 2025 calendar year in the Italian men’s SuperLega Credem Banca will get underway with the matches of the 15th leg of the regular season, with four games on Sunday, January 5, and another two on Monday, January 6. In the weekend opener and what is probably the most interesting fixture of the leg, fourth-placed Rana Verona will visit fifth-placed Cucine Lube Civitanova.

Cucine Lube Civitanova will host Rana Verona at an unusual hour, 15:20 local time (14:20 UTC), on Sunday. Both teams stand on 27 points, but the visitors edge ahead on a 9-5 win-loss record, while the hosts are on 8-5, but with a game in hand. In their last matches for 2024, the Coppa Italia quarterfinals, both teams came out successful and qualified for the semifinals later in January.

When they met during the first half of the regular season, in Verona in October, the hosts achieved a 3-1 victory. The overall head-to-head record between the two clubs, however, stands at 43-10 heavily in favour of Lube.

“The new year started immediately for us, because a very important match awaits us. Civitanova performed well in the first half-season, participated in the Club World Championship and is a club that I respect a lot because it has won a lot in recent years. We are working to compensate the absence of (Donovan) Dzavoronok, focusing on the game variations to maintain a positive trend, even if it is not easy when you are missing a player like him.” Radostin Stoytchev, head coach of Rana Verona

10 minutes later, at 15:30 (14:30) on Sunday, Gioiella Prisma Taranto will welcome Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza. Gas Sales are running third in the current standings on 29 points and a 10-4 win-loss record. Prisma are third from the bottom, in 10th place on 10 and 3-11, far from being safe for their place in the SuperLega next season. In October, Gas Sales beat Prisma at home in four sets.

Sonepar Padova Padua will entertain Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina on Sunday at 17:00 (16:00). Padova are in ninth place on 13 and 4-19, hoping to move up into the playoff zone, but also minding the threat of relegation, as bottom-placed rookies Grottazolina are not that far behind, in 12th place on 9 and 2-12. The two sides put up a five-set battle in the fall, with Padova squeezing out a nail-biting 18-16 win in the tie-breaker.

Sunday’s competition day will be closed by Cisterna Volley and Sir Susa Vim Perugia. They will meet in Cisterna di Latina at 18:30 (17:30). The home team stands seventh on 15 and 5-8, while the visitors from Perugia top the table undefeated, on 38 and 14-0. When they met in Perugia in October, Cisterna managed to snatch the first set before the defending champions came back to win the next three.

Two of last season’s SuperLega medallists will open Monday’s competition at 17:00 (16:00). Bronze medallists Allianz Milan, who are currently in sixth place on 21 and 7-7, will host runners-up Mint Vero Volley Monza, who now stand second from the bottom, in 11th place on 9 and 4-10. To make the situation even more difficult for the club from Monza, they were left by their experienced star opposite Ivan Zaytsev, who transferred to Turkiye’s Galatasaray HDI Sigorta Istanbul. It was in October’s home game against Allianz, when Zaytsev made his debut for Vero Volley, but his new team lost in four sets.

In the leg’s closing match, Valsa Group Modena will entertain Itas Trentino Trento on Monday at 18:30 (17:30). Modena are hanging on to the last place above the red line for the playoffs, standing eighth on 15 and 5-9, while the reigning European champions are second in the table on 33 and 11-2. Trentino won October’s home match with Modena in four sets.
