A total of 12 matches will be played in Burgas, with each of the six teams – Bulgaria, France, Japan, Slovenia, Turkiye and Ukraine – appearing in four of them. The daily programs for Wednesday and Sunday will feature three games each, while Thursday, Friday and Saturday will offer two matches a day.

Reigning back-to-back Olympic champions France arrive in Burgas as the ninth-placed team in the current VNL standings after the first competition week, on a 2-2 win-loss record and 5 points, right in the middle of the table, just below the cut-off for the Finals. To improve their position, however, they have made some major reinforcements to the roster for this week in Bulgaria, including Olympic champion stars like Barthelemy Chinenyeze, Jean Patry, Yacine Louati and team captain Antoine Brizard, joining their Paris 2024 teammates Trevor Clevenot and Theo Faure, who were in coach Andrea Giani’s selection already in week one.

“We know it’s impossible to live again through what we did in Paris. Playing in front of our crowd at the Olympics was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and then, winning of course was something amazing. But now we are trying to find new motivation because we want to keep French volleyball on a high level by helping this new generation grow. And of course, we are still hungry for victories…” Antoine Brizard, setter and captain of France

In this week’s opening match in Burgas, starting at 12:30 local time (09:30 UTC), France will take on VNL rookies Ukraine. Two weeks ago, even without their brightest international star Oleh Plotnytskyi on the squad, they entered the competition with a bang – earning victories against USA and Cuba, and taking the first two sets of their third match against Brazil – finishing the week above the red line for advancement, in seventh place on 2-2 and 7, and with an enhanced appetite for more…

Even higher in the table, always ambitious Slovenia are set to join the battles in Burgas as the fifth-placed team after winning three of their four matches in Rio de Janeiro and collecting eight points towards the standings. They will open their Burgas campaign with a match against Turkiye on Wednesday at 16:00 (13:00).

Currently standing in 16th place, Turkiye are the lowest ranked team among the six in Burgas, but after losing their first three matches of the season, they ended the first week on a high note, with a straight-set victory over hosts China in Xi’an and increased ambitions to keep growing and improve on what they achieved during their rookie season last year.

Japan, on the other hand, are the highest placed among the teams in Burgas, running in second place on 3-1 and 9. In their opening match of the week, Kento Miyaura and his teammates face a tough challenge in hosts Bulgaria and their faithful fans, expected to pack the stands for Wednesday’s game serving off at 19:30 (16:30).

Inspired by their rising star brothers Aleksandar Nikolov and Simeon Nikolov, Bulgaria showed growth as the season started, achieved two important wins and now stand 10th in the table on 2-2 and 5. For their home gig, the squad was joined by powerful opposite Dimitar Dimitrov and their team captain, middle blocker Aleks Grozdanov.

“You have to come to the national team absolutely ready to play. Yes, there is some tiredness after the club season, but this is our job and we have to learn how to rest. When you play for Bulgaria, the mindset is always positive. We are preparing hard and looking forward to the matches. We are a young team, so teamwork and team spirit are key. We will also rely on an emotional boost from the spectators.” Aleks Grozdanov, middle blocker and captain of Bulgaria

The VNL Preliminary Phase features three competition weeks, with each of the 18 teams playing a total of 12 matches. The eight best-ranked national teams in the Preliminary Phase will qualify for the Finals, which will be held in Ningbo, China from July 30 to August 3, with the host country already with a guaranteed spot.
