With the tree points earned, Campinas got to 30 (11 wins, three losses) and moved up to second place in the standings – they can be passed by Itambé Minas, who have the same 30 points and will play on Friday. Suzano are sixth, with 20 points (seven wins, seven losses).
The highlight of Campinas’ victory was their impressive comeback in the third set. The hosts saw themselves in a big hole early on, going down 10-1, and were as many as ten points behind at 14-4. However, with an impressive 21-9 run, they regained control of the set and completed the sweep.
“What happened tonight is pretty unique,” setter Cristiano Torelli reflected. “I’ve been playing for some time and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a team come back from such a huge deficit. But that’s kind of who we are as a team, we never give up. We may be down 24-0 and we’ll still fight to turn things around. Of course, it doesn’t always work, but we always give our best to change things when they’re not going well.”
Argentinean Olympic medalist opposite Bruno Lima was Campinas’ top scorer with 17 points (11 kills, three blocks, three aces) and took home the MVP award. Brazilian national team middle blocker Judson Nunes also had a strong shift, adding another ten with four aces, three kills and three blocks.
