Sada Cruzeiro relied on their star power and counted on great performances from Olympic champions Lucas Saatkamp, Douglas Souza and Wallace de Souza to triumph in the Derby of the second leg of the Brazilian Men’s Superliga, on Tuesday.

The reigning South American champions hosted in-state rivals Itambé Minas at the Riacho stadium, in Contagem, and prevailed after five intense sets, winning 3-2 (25-23, 16-25, 27-25, 23-25, 16-14).

With 19 points (12 kills, four blocks, three aces), middle blocker Lucas led the team’s scoring efforts and was awarded as the match’s MVP. Outside hitter Douglas contributed another 15 (13 kills, two aces), while team captain and opposite Wallace added ten, with eight kills, one ace and one block.

“The match was full of ups and downs,” Lucas said. “They made too many errors in the first set, but then did a good job of finding their rhythm in the second set, while our level dropped. We got it back halfway through the third set and maybe could even have had a more comfortable victory in the tie-breaker, but what matters is that we managed to win this very important match.”

Minas had the match’s top scorer in outside hitter Paulo Vinicios da Silva, who registered 21 points, with 18 kills, two aces and one block. Fellow outside hitter Willian Doardo, with 19 points, and opposite Abouba Dramé, with 18, also had productive nights.

“At this level, matches are decided by details and that’s where we need to improve,” Willian reflected. “It’s just about taking better care of the ball and being more efficient when we have a chance to score. We’ve been dealing with too many injuries early in the season and still couldn’t get our entire roster available, so I believe we have a lot of room for improvement.”

Sada secured their second victory in the Superliga and now have five points. Minas, on the other hand, have two defeats, but managed to get a point out of each of them.

Vôlei Renata also win in five

Also on Tuesday, Vôlei Renata had to play a tie-breaker as well, struggling to beat do Apan Vôlei Blumenau 3-2 (31-29, 15-25, 19-25, 25-10, 15-8). The team of longtime Brazilian national team captain Bruno Rezende benefited from 23 points from Argentinean Olympic medalist opposite Bruno Lima and 20 from Brazilian national team outside hitter Adriano Xavier.

The first matches of the second leg of the Brazilian Superliga were held over the weekend, with Vedacit Vôlei Guarulhos beating Suzano Vôlei 3-2 (25-22, 27-29, 21-25, 25-21, 19-17) on Saturday and defending champions SESI Bauru topping Vôlei São José 3-1 (25-19, 16-25, 25-17, 25-21) on Sunday.

Joinville Vôlei and Praia Clube duel on Wednesday, with in-state rivals Neurologia Ativa and Saneago Goiás Vôlei meeting in the last match of the second leg, on Saturday.
