Poland's Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie continued to collect victories in their first appearance in the FIVB Volleyball Men's Club World Championship on Wednesday, and are now just one step away from the semifinals in Belém, Brazil.

One day after earning a hard-fought five-set win against hosts Vôlei Renata Campinas in their debut, the Europeans returned to the Mangueirinho Arena on Wednesday and needed less time and effort to get another one, beating Asian champions Al-Rayyan Sports Club of Qatar 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-14).

With five points earned in their first two matches in Brazil, Warta Zawiercie are very close to securing one of the two Pool A spots in the semifinals. That could happen still on Wednesday, if Praia Clube, who have three points, beat Brazilian rivals Campinas, who have one, in three or four sets in the last match of the day, scheduled for 20:30 local time (23:30 UTC). With no points accumulated after two matches, Al-Rayyan are out of contention.

One of Warta Zawierce's top scorers in their opening match against Campinas, American outside hitter Aaron Russell stepped up for them again in the duel with the Qataris, leading the Polish side with 14 points (12 kills, two blocks). Fellow outside hitter Bartosz Kwolek contributed another 12, with ten kills, one block and one ace.

"We expected today's match not to be as hard as last night's," libero Jakub Popiwczak said. "We didn't start playing at our best level, but it improved during the match. This is a very big arena, too, and I feel that we'll continue to get better as we are better adapted to it."

Hungarian outside hitter Roland Gergye led the line for Al-Rayyan with eight points (six kills, two aces), one more than team captain and opposite Mubarak Hammad, who registered six kills and one ace.
