The victory made Perugia take the first step towards qualifying for the tournament's semifinals. The Italians collected three points and share the top of the Pool B standings with Japan's Osaka Bluteon, who shocked defending champions Sada Cruzeiro of Brazil with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-14) sweep earlier on Tuesday.
Rotating their team during the match, Perugia had in Tunisian opposite Wassim Ben Tara their leading scorer - he tallied ten points, with eight kills, one block and one ace. Czech outside hitter Donovan Džavoronok and Argentine middle blocker Agustín Loser contributed eight points each, while setter and team captain Simone Giannelli added six, with three blocks, three kills and one ace.
"We couldn't have hoped for a better debut," Džavoronok said. "We worked very well as a team, everybody contributed, and we need to take it with us for the rest of the tournament. I'm happy with how we started, but now we need to focus on the next match. Osaka are going to be tougher opponents, but we want to show that we're here to win."
