Liliana rejoices after victorious start to Paris Olympics

Spain’s big women’s beach volleyball star Liliana Fernаndez, currently playing her fourth Olympic Games, announced that Paris 2024 will be her last one and that she will probably stop playing professionally even before the end of the season. Right after the victorious start of her pairing with Paula Soria at the Eiffel Tower Stadium on Sunday morning, the 37-year-old Spaniard spoke to the FIVB about her emotions before during and after the game against Italy’s Marta Menegatti & Valentina Gottardi.

In the women’s Pool A opening match, Liliana & Paula celebrated a hard-fought 2-1 (24-22, 9-21, 16-14) win over Menegatti & Gottardi, with Liliana herself acing for the winners in the overtime of both the first set and the tie-breaker.

“It was amazing!” Liliana exclaimed. “That last serve, I just saw the ball going out towards the referee and I was like ‘oh, my god, we won!’ It was so exciting, because we lost the last two times against Marta and Vale. They are a great team. They are playing super, super well. We just wanted to get inside, try to do our job, enjoy and smile, because we are at the Olympic Games.

“Then we saw that they were shaking a little bit, which is normal, because I was too, and we tried to push, and that is when we got to win the first set. The second one was terrible. I kind of turned my mind off and tried to come back, but I couldn’t find the reception, I couldn’t find the sideout, and I was like, ‘OK, we go to the third; let’s try to find the rhythm of the first set. And I think we did, because we started switching the serves to Vale, and that gave us a little bit of a distance. Then we gained our confidence in sideout, point by point, and that last serve was just a great ending.”

Liliana in action

Liliana spent most of her career as a partner of Elsa Baquerizo, who retired after the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games three years ago. Together, they played at three Olympics, collected seven FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour medals and made three CEV European Championship podiums. Liliana took her second baby break after Tokyo and returned to the courts in 2023 with a new partner, Paula Soria. They won three medals on the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour and the most recent one, the Stare Jablonki Challenge bronze in early June this year, was probably the most important one as it practically sealed them a last-minute ticket to the Games in Paris. And although it is already Liliana’s fourth time at the Olympics, she still feels the excitement about competing at such a forum.

“I can compare this with nothing else, but London,” she said. “It was my first Olympics. That feeling, those emotions... I was shaking. It was similar maybe in Rio. Tokyo was pretty much calm, still with Elsa... And now I was still very, very calm. I was telling Paola, ‘it doesn’t matter if we win or lose, because what you will keep in your memory is the feeling you have from playing this game, not from winning or losing; just try to enjoy and smile,’ and I think we did.”

Unlike well-seasoned Liliana, Paula is a newcomer to the Olympic and shared her thoughts about her successful debut at Paris 2024.

“The truth is, I was very nervous before the start of the game, but once we began playing, I concentrated, calmed down and the pressure dropped,” she said. “In the end, I was super happy and super satisfied. There were a lot of Spanish spectators and Spanish flags on the stands. My family is also here, so yes, I am super happy!”

Liliana & Paula greet the fans on the stands at the Eiffel Tower Stadium

Liliana & Paula took on Menegatti & Gottardi in front of a sell-out crowd as it has been at all matches of the Olympic beach volleyball event so far, and the fans’ cheers certainly contributed to a great atmosphere on the stands and to a great game on the court.

“It was just amazing to play with a full crowd again. I thought Tokyo was a little bit sad in that way,” Liliana commented. “I know there was an FIVB World Tour event here, when I was not playing yet. Around that time, I saw the pictures and I thought, ‘wow, this is amazing!’ And now, to get to play at the Olympics under the Eiffel Tower is another dream come true. Now everybody wants to come and watch beach volleyball, because the setup is just unique! When we were on the court, we saw all the Spanish flags on the stands, we felt the support. The crowd was kind of cheering for us, or at least this is what we felt, and it was so cool. It filled our hearts!

“I thought Tokyo was going to be my last Olympics, but luckily we qualified for Paris. It was a crazy run this year! And I am so happy that I get to enjoy the Olympics and end my career with people on the stands. Yes, this is definitely my last Olympics and I am not even going to the end of this season. After the pregnancy, my hips are going crazy, so there is no chance of continuing...”

Liliana in attack, cheered on by thousands on the stands

But before putting an end to her great playing career, Liliana has at least two more matches to play in Paris. In their next Pool A game, the Spanish duo will challenge the world’s number one team, Eduarda Santos Lisboa (Duda) & Ana Patricia Ramos of Brazil, on Wednesday at 21:00 local time (19:00 UTC).

“Ana Patricia & Duda are the favourites in our next match, again, so we just have to do what we do – get on the court and smile. And if things are not going well, just try to think, come back and try again, and try again, and try again... And keep smiling!”
