Verona and Gas Sales are about to engage in an exciting quarterfinal battle

It’s time for the most exciting part of the season! The Italian men’s SuperLega Credem Banca regular season is over and the playoffs start today! The four quarterfinal match-ups have been set and the best-of-five series are ready to serve off this weekend – two on Saturday and two on Sunday – with the teams classified higher in the final regular season standings hosting the opening matches.

Sir Susa Vim Perugia v Valsa Group Modena

Defending champions Sir Susa Vim Perugia were in the lead through most of the regular season, but in a photo finish ending they were overtaken in the last minute to finish in second place on 57 points and a 20-2 win-loss record. On Saturday, at 16:00 local time (15:00 UTC), they will play host to Valsa Group Modena, who took seventh place on 29 and 9-13. The two clubs have already met three times this season, twice during the regular season and once in a Coppa Italia quarterfinal, and Sir swept all three of these encounters in straight sets. In fact, the last time Modena managed to take a set from the Block Devils was in November 2023, and the last time they managed to beat this opponent was back in April 2022.

“Being the favorites doesn't count for much, because we have to play on the court. In my experience, in fact, it counts for nothing! We're playing at home on Saturday, so I'm very happy to start here at the Pala Barton Energy with all the fans. I hope the arena is full of people! We are playing against a team with very, very experienced players, who know how to approach these matches.” Simone Giannelli, setter and captain of Sir Susa Vim Perugia
“We have reached the most anticipated moment. We have been working all season to be ready for the playoffs. Perugia is a tough opponent, but in the last matches we have found good continuity and we are charged. Of course, we will give everything to achieve the feat. We will have to push ourselves to the limit and maintain the best level of play for as long as possible.” Paul Buchegger, opposite of Valsa Group Modena
Itas Trentino Trento v Cisterna Volley

Itas Trentino Trento was the team that took over the first place in a last-minute turnaround in the regular season. They topped the table on 57 and 20-2, separated from Sir by a slight difference in the set ratios. On Saturday, at 20:30 (19:30), the club world silver medalists and reigning European champions will welcome Cisterna Volley, who took eighth place on 24 and 9-13 and qualified for the playoffs for the first time in the club’s history. These two also met three times earlier this season, with Trentino winning in all three cases. Cisterna managed to take away a set from their home encounter in the regular season and from their Coppa Italia quarterfinal on the road. Cisterna has been able to beat the mighty opponent twice in the 15 meetings they have had, most recently in January 2023.

“The new phase will require a very different approach compared to the previous one. We will need to put the maximum level of attention on the court to aspire to express ourselves consistently at our highest levels; we will be able to count on the push of our fans in three of the five potential games of the series and this definitely represents a plus for us. On the other side of the net we will find a team like Cisterna that will certainly put up a battle.” Fabio Soli, head coach of Itas Trentino Trento
“Facing Itas Trentino is always a particularly demanding challenge, especially in a difficult context like their arena. Itas played an excellent regular season, deserving first place in the standings. However, the playoffs erase every previous result, and our goal is to start again with determination, trying to express our maximum potential against them. It will be essential to approach the match with the right attitude right from the first exchanges, putting in the maximum effort to obtain the best possible result.” Theo Faure, opposite of Cisterna Volley
Cucine Lube Civitanova v Allianz Milan

By winning the Coppa Italia trophy earlier this year, Cucine Lube Civitanova has already exceeded the stated goals of their young squad at the start of the season. They will enter the upcoming playoffs as the number three team in the bracket, having finished the regular season on 46 and 14-8. Lube have not suffered a single defeat at home this season, be it in the SuperLega, the Coppa Italia or the CEV Challenge Cup, and hope to continue this trend as they entertain Allianz Milan at the Eurosuole Forum on Sunday at 17:00 (16:00). Last year’s bronze medalists from Milan finished this regular season in sixth place on 36 and 12-10. The two teams exchanged straight-set home victories as they met during the regular season. Their last encounter in December’s Coppa Italia quarterfinals produced a five-set battle, with hosts Lube celebrating the win.

“We are satisfied with our position in the regular season and we are physically and mentally ready. I remember well the defeat suffered in Milan at the beginning of the championship and I know that we will face a team that is tough to beat, but the victories achieved at home in the return game and in the Italy Cup give me confidence. Above all, we feel strong on our court and ready to play with anyone.” Adis Lagumdzija, opposite of Cucine Lube Civitanova
“I hope we arrive with full psychophysical energy to withstand the pressure from Lube, and have the ability to respond blow for blow. Technically, I believe that the key could be the quality of the two teams in serving. And I expect a lot from our middle blockers. I am convinced that these four arrows in our bow could be fundamental.” Fabio Lini, general director of Allianz Milan
Rana Verona v Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza

The series between Rana Verona and Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza has the potential of being the closest and most competitive one among the four quarterfinal playoffs. The two opponents were close competitors for the most part of the regular season and finished neighbors in the standings. Verona took fourth place on 41 and 14-8, and Gas Sales took fifth on 39 and 13-9. So Sunday’s first quarterfinal game between them will take place in Verona at 19:30 (18:30). Verona was quite convincing in the head-to-head encounters with the squad from Piacenza during the regular season and shut out the opponents in both cases. In their Coppa Italia quarterfinal, however, the duel was pushed to five sets before Verona could continue on their quest in the competition.

“It's obvious that all the experience is on their side and their quality is very high. In this series, we don't start as favorites, despite the victories we've already achieved against them. But in the playoffs, the story is different, because these are matches where you play a lot with your head and your emotions, where whoever knows how to contain them best will have an advantage.” Radostin Stoytchev, head coach of Rana Verona
“We are ready to play with Verona who remains our bete noire, having seen us off on all fronts. We can't wait to face the most important part of the championship.” Leonardo Scanferla, libero of Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza
