Sir and Modena are heading back to Perugia for their third quarterfinal leg

Two of the eight teams competing in the Italian men’s SuperLega Credem Banca quarterfinals may already emerge as the first semifinalists this weekend as the third leg of the first playoff round takes place. Sir Susa Vim Perugia and Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza lead their best-of-five series against Valsa Group Modena and Rana Verona, respectively, by 2-0 in wins and stand within a win from the next round. It is too early to close any of the other two quarterfinal playoffs – Cucine Lube Civitanova v Allianz Milan and Itas Trentino Trento v Cisterna Volley – as they are both balanced at 1-1 in wins each.

Rana Verona v Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza

Rana Verona and Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza will open the SuperLega weekend on Saturday at 21:00 local time (20:00 UTC). Although Verona finished the regular season above Gas Sales in the standings, the squad from Piacenza managed to take a 2-0 lead in this quarterfinal series and are on the verge of claiming the first ticket to the semifinal playoffs. So far, they collected a 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-17, 25-20) away victory in the first leg and a 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-18) shutout at home in the second. Now it’s Verona’s turn to host the third match, hoping to stay alive in the series and extend it to a fourth and fifth. The historic head-to-head record between the two clubs stands at 13-7 in match wins Gas Sales’ way.

“The match is certainly important and challenging. Gas Sales are in very good shape and, after a difficult period in the championship, they have found the perfect balance. They are physically and mentally well. That’s why it will be a difficult challenge. We are fine, we are training hard and the boys are really focused on the goal. We came in fourth at the end of the regular season and we felt really strong. The first two games of the series took away some of our confidence, but I know that this aspect of pride and showing who we are is something the guys are demonstrating to me every day. I asked the lads not to look back and only look at Saturday. Nothing else matters!” Dario Simoni, head coach of Rana Verona
“The playoffs are very complicated. Every game is a new story. We have to think that we are two games ahead, but rather that we are two games down. Only this way we can we do well in game three in Verona. We have seen many reversals of results in the playoffs. The important thing is to face the next game as if it were a final and try to put into practice what we are doing during the week at the gym. We all know that it will be a difficult game, more difficult than those already played, but we are ready to face another great challenge.” Robertlandy Simon, middle blocker of Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza
Itas Trentino Trento v Cisterna Volley

Cisterna Volley created the biggest surprise of the playoffs so far by leveling their quarterfinal series against almighty Itas Trentino Trento last Sunday. This Sunday, the club world silver medalists and reigning European champions will try to bring things back to “normal” as they host the third game of the playoff at 15:30 (14:30). In the first match, Trentino mastered a 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-14) shutout of Cisterna at home, but in the second the playoff rookies delighted their fans with a historic 3-1 (25-21, 27-25, 19-25, 26-24) victory. It was also the first time ever Cisterna beat this opponent since the new club was founded in 2023, bringing the overall head-to-head record to 6-1 Trentino’s way.

“We must try to raise our level from here to the end, finding all the energy still available because we still have these playoffs to play. The priority is to regain concentration and raise the level, because all our opponents from now on will do it.” Riccardo Sbertoli, setter of Itas Trentino Trento
“We managed to win an important match, but now we are back at the gym with the goal of preparing game three the best we can. We took a weight off our shoulders against Itas Trentino and with this success we face the next challenge with greater serenity. Trento expresses a very high and constant level of play, so we will have to maintain the same concentration shown in game two. Meanwhile, we enjoy this first victory against Itas and look forward to the next match with determination.” Domenico Pace, libero of Cisterna Volley
Cucine Lube Civitanova v Allianz Milan

Last Sunday, Cucine Lube Civitanova managed to level the series against Allianz Milan. They produced an emphatic 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-20) sweep of the second game on the road, after suffering their first home defeat of the season the previous weekend, a tight a 3-2 (27-29, 25-23, 18-25, 25-23, 17-15) Allianz’s way. Of course, the squad from Milan will now try to keep the trend and add another away victory in the series as they visit Civitanova Marche on Sunday at 18:00 (17:00). The overall head-to-head balance stands heavily in favour of Lube. The Coppa Italia winners have so far won 23 of the previous 32 encounters with Allianz.

“We've already raised our heads this year after some disappointments and we've always started again. We did it last Sunday in Milan and we'll start again with the right mindset on Sunday at home.” Giampaolo Medei, head coach of Cucine Lube Civitanova
“A really important match is coming up on Sunday. Lube showed us who they are in game two and why they finished third in the regular season. They are a team capable of playing these really impressive matches, like the one at Allianz Cloud. On the other hand, I can say that it wasn’t us on Sunday. We are disappointed and angry for having missed an opportunity at home in front of our fans. That was a non-match for us. We want to start again and do better. We can play much better than we did in game one that we won in Civitanova. We are training hard and with conviction and that is how we are facing this challenge.” Yacine Louati, outside hitter of Allianz Milan
Sir Susa Vim Perugia v Valsa Group Modena

Sir Susa Vim Perugia and Valsa Group Modena will close the second leg of the quarterfinals on Sunday with their game starting at 19:00 (18:00). Defending champions Sir came back from a set down to register a 3-1 (23-25, 32-30, 25-22, 25-18) victory over Modena in the first leg at home. The Block Devils left no room for surprises in the away match in Modena last Sunday and mastered a 3-0 (25-21, 28-26, 25-15) victory to open a 2-0 lead in the series. The all-time head-to-head between the two clubs now stands 33-20 in favor of the Perugia team.

“On Sunday, in the first two sets, we maintained a high level, playing on par with Perugia. There is some regret for the end of the second set where we could have tied the match. Against teams like that you cannot allow yourself to slow down because you risk ruining the good work already done. Now in game three, we have our backs against the wall, but we can turn this into an advantage for us. We will give it our all. It will be difficult to beat Perugia at their home because they will be determined to close the series immediately. We will have to remain firm and not be overwhelmed by their game.” Giovanni Sanguinetti, middle blocker of Valsa Group Modena
