Stysiak powers gold-ribboned Poland to second win at home

For a second day in a row, Magdalena Stysiak, Poland’s promising opposite, raised five kill blocks against the opponents and delivered the match highs towards her team’s victories in Pool C of the women’s FIVB Road to Paris Volleyball Qualifiers. After leading the home team to a straight-set win over Slovenia with 18 points on Saturday, the 23-year-old striker hammered another 22 towards Sunday’s success against Korea.

Germany, United States and Italy also achieved their second victories in Lodz on Sunday.

For the game against Korea, the home team came out on court wearing golden ribbons on their jerseys in support of a #GoldSeptember campaign for childhood cancer awareness.

But the Poles had no charitable thoughts and showed no mercy for the Korean spikers as they raised 22 kill blocks during the match, a phenomenal number that made the big difference towards the final outcome, as the opponents managed to score only eight stuffs in blocking.

As many as nine Polish players lined up among the authors of those 22 blocks. Magdalena Stysiak produced five of them and added 17 points in offence to top the scorers’ chart of the game. She was closely followed by outside hitter Martyna Lukasik with 20 points, while Kang Sohwi and Pyo Seungju led Korea with 16 and 15 points, respectively.

Poland’s next match in Lodz is against Colombia on Tuesday at 17:30 local time (15:30 UTC). On Sunday, Colombia surprised Germany by winning the first set of their encounter, but then the Europeans came back strong to claim a victory, with outside hitter Lina Alsmeier leading the way with 22 points, including two aces and a block.

Opposite Jordan Thompson put away a match-high 18 points (two blocks, one ace) towards United States’ sweep of Thailand, while her Italian counterpart Ekaterina Antropova registered 16 points (three blocks, one ace) towards her team’s emphatic success against Slovenia.
