With less than 24 hours to the start of the men’s volleyball tournament of the Paris 2024 Olympics, players from the 12 men’s national teams qualified to compete in the event are finalizing their preparations for their first matches in the French capital.

On Friday, the last day before matches start, some of them were at the South Paris Arena facility, making the final adjustments ahead of the most important tournament of the season.

Argentina are one of the eight men’s national teams that will be on the court on Saturday, as they face the United States in the last match of the day, at 21:00 local time (19:00 GMT), in Pool C. Earlier, at 9:00 local time (7:00 GMT), Japan will face Germany in the same pool.

Coming from a bronze medal-winning campaign in Tokyo three years ago, the South Americans are confident they can be among the top teams of the event again and they count on a strong performance in their debut to get things going the right way in Paris.

“We’re really excited to start the Olympics,” said opposite Bruno Lima, the top scorer of the Tokyo Games. “The United States will be very tough opponents, but we are ready to start well. Our pool is very difficult, but all are, so we’ll take every match as a final. Getting here having won bronze in Tokyo gives us a little extra responsibility, but we are very aware of what we are as a team and we definitely want to be at the podium again. The arena is very big and beautiful and we’re looking forward to playing there.”

Also on Saturday, African representatives Egypt will face Poland at 17:00 local time (15:00 GMT) in a Pool B encounter – four hours earlier, volleyball powerhouses Italy and Brazil will clash at the South Paris Arena 1.

The Egyptians are returning to the Games after failing to qualify for Tokyo 2020 and know they will have a tough path in pool play facing three volleyball giants, but keep their hopes alive and their confidence elevated ahead of their opening match.

“It’s definitely going to be a tough start for us, but we’ll try to focus on our game and hopefully take the win,” outside hitter Ahmed Omar remarked. “It was a long journey for us to qualify and being here is a dream. But we want to continue in this dream and we’ll try our best to advance to the next round. Against such tough opponents, it’s hard to know what to expect, but we’re ready to do our best. I really like the color scheme of the arena, it’s very clean, and we can’t wait to play there in front of the fans.”

Serbia ready to face France on Sunday

Pool A will only start on Sunday, giving the four teams involved an extra day to prepare – hosts and defending champions France will play Serbia at 17:00 local time (15:00 GMT), while Slovenia and Canada meet later, at 21:00 local time (19:00 GMT).

The Serbians were among the last teams to qualify for Paris and confirmed their return to the Games after 12 years just a few weeks ago, during the Volleyball Nations League 2024. Their first match at the South Paris Arena 1 will pose a big challenge for them, but they believe they can be on the right side of an opening-match upset on Sunday.

“Not qualifying for the last two Olympics was really tough for us because in 2016 we had just won the FIVB World League and for Tokyo, I was really confident we could win a medal if we qualified,” reflected middle blocker Marko Podraščanin, one of three Olympic veterans in the squad. “Being here means a lot to us, but it’s not the end. We have a tough pool, but I feel that we’ve been playing better and better since the start of the VNL and are in great shape now. Having France in our opening match is hard, they are probably the best team in the world now and just won the VNL without two or three starters. But getting being the outsiders could actually be good for us as strange things happen in opening matches. Regardless of what happens, the matches against Canada and Slovenia will also be huge for us to qualify.”
