Italy’s Alice Degradi in attack against Thailand

Defending champions Italy stormed this week’s second competition day in the women’s Volleyball Nations League with a convincing shutout of Thailand in Hong Kong to remain undefeated since the start of the season, now topping the current VNL standings on a 6-0 win-loss record and 17 points. The Asian team stands in 15th place on 1-5 and 4.

The reigning Olympic champions dominated the match and their superiority resulted in a speedy 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-18) victory.

Italy’s star opposite Paola Egonu was on fire during the first set, producing as many as nine points to get the team clicking. Although she was replaced during the second game for the rest of the match, she was still the best scorer of the match in the end, on a total of 13 points, including two kill blocks. Her substitution Adhuoljok John Majak Malual showed some great efficiency in offence. Swinging at a fantastic 80% success rate, she finished with a 10-point tally, also including two kill blocks. Adding another two stuffs in blocking and an ace from the serving line, middle blocker Sarah Fahr registered a 78% success rate in attack and also finished with 10 points. She authored Italy’s last two points in the third set to win the match. Thailand’s leading scorer, outside and captain Ajcharaporn Kongyot, put away nine points.

“This match was as important as the other matches we are playing. I am really proud of my team, because we were really focused from the beginning, trying to not make mistakes and just play the game like we always do. We hope we continue to play the same way that we did today,” Malual told VBTV.

The rest of the day offers another five matches. VNL action will continue in Hong Kong with hosts China taking on Bulgaria at 20:30 local time (12:30 UTC), and then move on to the games between Belgium and the Dominican Republic and between Canada and Turkiye in Istanbul and the games between USA and Poland and between Germany and Serbia in Belgrade.
