Lena Stigrot scored 15 points in her second match in the VNL 2025

One day after prevailing over Canada in a dramatic five-set battle in Arlington, Germany secured what could be another key victory in their attempt to qualify for the Volleyball Nations League 2025 Finals on Thursday.

The Europeans returned to the College Park Center facility in Texas and delivered a vastly more consistent performance that allowed them to beat Thailand 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-11) and secure their second sweep in the tournament.

Their second victory in as many days helped the Germans get closer to securing a spot in the VNL 2025 Finals, as they moved up from seventh to sixth place in the VNL standings, getting to six wins and 19 points and passing China, who don’t play on Thursday and have a game in hand. Now winless in their last six matches, Thailand continue to be threatened by relegation, ranking 17th in the VNL standings with one win and five points.

Outside hitters Lina Alsmeier and Lena Strigrot carried the German offense against the Thais, with the former getting a match-high 16 points (13 kills, two blocks, one ace) and the latter registering 15, with 14 kills and one block. Team captain and middle blocker Camilla Weitzel also had a solid display, contributing 12 points (eight kills, three aces, one block).

“We’re fighting for every ball this week, and I think that’s given us a lot of strength,” Stigrot reacted. “I think that really showed today, and it’s really exciting to see the team develop and do a little bit more every day. We need to continue in the way we did today. We were very disciplined in our tactics, and we pushed hard on serving, which is one of our big strengths.”

On the Asian side, star opposite Pimpichaya Kokram was the only one to get to double digits, recording 13 points with 11 kills and two blocks.

“We couldn’t play our style of game today,” head coach Kiattipong Radchatagriengkai reflected. “And Germany also deserves a lot of credit for a great performance. They served really hard and were very good at attacking and blocking. But we’re still very hungry to win and our players are in great spirits, so we’ll try to do it in our next match.”

Hosts the United States and the Dominican Republic will clash in the second and last match of the day in Arlington, battling at 19:30 local time (00:30 GMT, Friday) at the College Park Center.
