Brazil (BRA) vs. China (CHN) men - Quarterfinals #53335781

The fantastic atmosphere at the Beilun Gymnasium for the Brazil v China quarterfinal

Inspired by the fantastic home crowd at the Beilun, China provoked their mighty opponent by coming back from an early four-point deficit to snatch the epic first set deep into the overtime, and then staying in the lead through 17-14 in the second set. But twisting the lion’s tail resulted in a fierce bite. With setter Fernando Kreling (Cachopa) behind the serving line, Brazil produced a series of nine unanswered points and sharply reversed the course of the match. They were well in control of set three, and then coped with a Chinese insurgency in set four, turning things around with a five-point run, once again at Cachopa’s turn to serve, shortly before a kill block by middle Flavio Gualberto delivered the match winner.

Brazil outperformed China in serving with six aces against four, but more eloquently in attack with 54 kills against 45 and in precision with 27 unforced errors against 36. Opposite Alan Souza showed a 58% success rate in spiking and contributed a match-high total of 26 points, including two kill blocks and an ace. 21-year-old outside hitter Lukas Bergmann chipped in with 10 points, all in swings. Cachopa led the servers with three aces towards a total tally of five points.

“It was a tough day. It’s not easy to play the Finals,” the Brazilian playmaker told VBTV after the game. “It’s not easy to play against them. They are a really good team and were playing in front of their fans, so it was a really tough game for us. But it was really fun to play here. With all those fans, it was incredible!”

Blocking was the one scoring element, in which China outplayed Brazil. The home team raised 11 kill blocks against eight from their South American rivals. Middle Li Yongzhen authored four of those to finish with eight points, while another three of his teammates reached the double digits. Wen Zihua led the way with 15 points, followed by captain Jiang Chuan with 11 and outside hitter Yu Yuantai with 10.

“I think we played a very good match. We did very well in serving and attack,” commented Wen. “Under the leadership of our coach Vital (Heynen), we have been growing every day and accumulating experience through these matches.”

“We played an amazing first set. In the second and the fourth sets, we were equal to 17-17, and then we start to think about winning, ‘oh, we can win against Brazil!’, and then we make all the mistakes. We train very well and we are ready to play well until the moment of truth arrives and we forget everything. And that’s very normal, because the team was never in this situation. So we need more of these situations to learn,” China’s Belgian coach Heynen added. “I see big steps forward, but we have to be very fair that Brazil is many steps in front of us. That is clear, but I go out of the VNL with a very nice feeling. We were fighting and that was the most important. Sport is about giving everything. My guys were giving everything. That’s what I want!”
