De Cecco is one of the five setters selected by Méndez

Captain Luciano De Cecco will lead Argentina in the Volleyball Nations League 2023 as the 34-year-old star setter is part of the 24-player list released by head coach Marcelo Méndez ahead of the start of the international season.

De Cecco, who’s currently involved in the SuperLega Credem Banca Finals with his club Cucine Lube Civitanova, is set to start his 18th season with the Argentinean national team after being called up for the first time back in 2006.

Besides De Cecco, 12 other players who helped Argentina finish eighth at last year’s FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship will also return to be a part of the team in 2023, including opposite Bruno Lima, middle blocker Agustín Loser and libero Santiago Danani.

Their only absence, however, is a big one as star outside hitter Facundo Conte, who recently led Ciudad Voley to their first Argentinean title, will not be with the team during the VNL. The player and the coaching staff agreed that he should be rested during the tournament – a decision about his future with the national team will be made later in the season.

Argentina, who took bronze at the Tokyo Olympics two years ago, will play a pair of exhibition matches against Cuba in Tecnópolis on June 1 and 2. From there, they will head straight to Ottawa, Canada, where they face Italy, Brazil, Canada and the Netherlands in the first week of the VNL, from June 6-11.

Besides the VNL, the Argentineans will also compete in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament, the South American Championship and the Pan-American Games during the 2023 season.
