The third week of the Volleyball Nations League 2025 Preliminary Phase will be pivotal for the aspirations of each of the 18 national teams competing in the tournament, and it will be no different in Ljubljana, where battles on both ends of the standings will unfold from Wednesday to Sunday.

With each of them set to play four matches at the Arena Stožice this week, hosts Slovenia, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, Serbia and Ukraine all have a lot to fight for and will give everything they have to achieve their goals in the tournament.

Third-placed Italy (six wins, 17 points) and sixth-placed Ukraine (five wins, 15 points) enter the week inside the qualification zone for the Finals, while 12th-placed Slovenia (four wins, 11 points) and 14th-placed Canada (three wins, 11 points) aim to end the Preliminary Phase among the seven national teams that will join hosts China in the decisive stage of the tournament. The two lowest-ranked teams in the VNL standings right now, 17th-placed the Netherlands (one win, four points) and 18th-placed Serbia (one win, three points), need to avoid the bottom spot to continue in the VNL next season.

World champions Italy get to Week 3 in a great position to qualify, which they will do regardless of other results if they win three of their four matches in Slovenia. The Europeans have opposite Yuri Romanò as their leading scorer with 87 points, captain Simone Giannelli ranking fourth among the VNL setters (191 actions), outside hitter Alessandro Michieletto appearing in fourth place among the servers (12 aces) and middle Giovanni Gargiulo standing out as the fifth best blocker (19 stops).

"Every team competing here in Ljubljana will fight for any point they can get," opposite Kamil Rychlicki said. "On our side, we'll try to get as many victories as possible, but we can't forget that all other teams have their own goals and that they will certainly make our mission very tough."

Ukraine have been doing very well in their first-ever VNL campaign and have a solid chance of appearing in the Finals. With 124 points scored, outside hitter Illia Kovalov has been leading the team offensively in the tournament. Captain Yurii Semeniuk is the top blocker in the entire VNL with 27 stops, while outside hitter Dmytro Yanchuk and opposite Vasyl Tupchii are tied for fifth in aces, with 11 each.

"Our results have been amazing so far," outside hitter Yevhenii Kisiliuk acknowledged. "We didn't expect to start so well, to be honest. Our goal here is to make it to the Finals, but we're ready for everything in this third week. I like our chances, but we'll try to do our best and see what happens. The team looks very different after the first weeks as our expectations changed. We practiced a lot in these last two weeks, and we're ready for anything."

After making it to the semifinals in 2024, Slovenia didn’t have a great start to their VNL campaign this season, but they count on the support of their home fans to make a push in the last week of the Preliminary Phase. Outside hitter Rok Možič has been their most productive player in the tournament so far, with 97 points scored. Fourth in the VNL in digs (61), libero Jani Kovačič is another standout for the home team.

"We are, as always, very happy to play at home this week because this is the best environment for us to compete," team captain and outside hitter Tine Urnaut said. "We'll do our best to secure a spot in the Finals. This season, we're introducing a little bit of quicker plays, and we brought some new players to the team, so our priority in the VNL has been to play our best volleyball possible and see where the results take us."

Going through a strong renovation, Canada had ups and downs in the first two weeks, but can still make it to the Finals if things go their way this week in Ljubljana. Opposite Xander Ketrzynski has been their most reliable offensive weapon, with 89 points registered so far. Middle blocker Fynn McCarthy (fourth in blocks, with 22) is well-positioned in the individual stats.

"The confidence in our team has been growing each day we practice together," outside hitter Brodie Hofer revealed. "We have a young group of players, but one of the things that benefits our team is that we've been playing together and against each other since we were 15 years old. Our strength comes from the connections that we have, and that brings a lot of confidence for our team coming into week three."

The Netherlands are also fielding a very young team in the VNL 2025 and find themselves fighting against relegation after the first two weeks. Filling the big shoes of Nimir Abdel-Aziz at opposite, Michiel Ahyi has been performing well for the Dutch, having tallied 124 points so far. Outside hitter Tom Koops, who leads the VNL in passes (81) and ranks sixth in digs (59) and middle blocker Luuc van Der Ent, who’s sixth in blocks (18), have also been delivering solid performances.

"The two-week break before the third week was good for us," setter Wessel Keemink explained. "Our first week was decent, but on the second, not much worked for us. We've got to practice hard, build some confidence, and I hope we get into these matches with more confidence. We need to play as a team and hopefully get the results that we need."

Sitting at the bottom of the VNL standings, Serbia desperately need to score points this week to avoid relegation. One of the veterans in the team, opposite Drazen Luburić is their leading scorer, with 102 points. Middle blocker Aleksandar Nedeljković has scored 22 blocking points and ranks fourth in the VNL in the category. Fighting to stay in the VNL, head coach Gheorghe Crețu is set to bring setter Nikola Jovović and outside hitter Pavle Perić to the court this week.

"Our team struggled in the past two weeks, but there's always light at the end of the tunnel," Jovović remarked. "I hope that Pavle and I can help the team get some wins. We lost some tough matches at the end of sets, and our situation is now very serious, so we need to manage to be better in the last four matches. All four opponents here will be very strong, but we'll give our best and try something new to get the results."
