Serbia (SRB) vs. France (FRA) men - Pool 5 - Preliminary Phase #5654174

Clevenot scored 17 points in a big win for France

Defending champions France gained control of their faith in the Volleyball Nations League 2023 as the Europeans now depend only on their own results to advance to the Finals and have a shot of defending the title they won in 2022.

The Olympic champions won a critical match against Serbia on Friday in Anaheim, the United States, securing a 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 25-20, 28-26) victory that significantly improved their chances of making the trip to Gdansk, Poland, from July 19-26.

France have now five wins in ten matches (15 points) and rank ninth, with the same number of victories as the Netherlands, but two points less. If they win their last two matches, the French will qualify for the Finals. Serbia went down from ninth to tenth, but remain in the mix with five wins and 13 points.

“I think the team started to play better in the second set and am really happy because this victory is important for us,” middle blocker Daryl Bultor said. “Serbia were direct opponents for us and now we caught them. We still have two matches and will need to win to advance. We’ll keep playing together and enjoying it and we’ll see where it takes us.”

Olympic champions Jean Patry and Trevor Clevenot led the French offense, combining for 35 points – the opposite led all scorers with 18 (16 kills, two blocks), one more than the outside hitter, who got his entire production with kills. Bultor, who came off the bench in the second set, also played a major role in the French victory, producing 13 points (nine kills, four blocks).

Serbia also had four players reaching double digits in scoring in opposite Drazen Luburic (17), outside hitter Marko Ivovic (12) and middle blockers Petar Krsmanovic (11) and Aleksandar Nedeljkovic (ten).

The efficiency of the French offense proved to be the difference between the teams as the Olympic champions got 57 points in kills to 49 of their opponents. The two sides had the exact same points in blocks (ten) and aces (two), while the French had a slim edge in points generated by opponent errors (33 to 29).
