Four thousand fans in the stands at the BTS Arena witnessed a spectacular duel, in which visitors Rana Verona came back from two sets down to beat defending champions and table leaders Itas Trentino Trento in the tie-breaker and disappoint the home crowd. Reigning club world and European champions Sir Susa Scai Perugia took advantage of this result to take over the first place in the current standings in the Italian men’s volleyball SuperLega Credem Banca.

On Sunday evening, Rana Verona produced a 3-2 (20-25, 20-25, 25-22, 25-18, 15-13) reverse sweep to defeat Itas Trentino Trento on their ground and overtake them in the table. Verona climbed to second place on 36 points and a 13-2 win-loss record, while the previous leaders dropped to third on 36 and 12-3. Malian outside hitter Noumory Keita was the top scorer of the match with 29 points. He spiked 25 at a 63% success rate and put away two aces and two kill blocks towards his Most Valuable Player (MVP) performance. His teammate, Brazilian opposite Darlan Souza, added 21 points, including four aces, while outside Alessandro Michieletto and French opposite Theo Faure were Trentino’s most prolific scorers with 15 points each.

Meanwhile, Sir Susa Scai Perugia earned three points from their 3-1 (27-25, 19-25, 25-21, 25-20) home victory over Valsa Group Modena and rose to first place on 38 and 13-2. Modena remained in fourth on 31 and 10-5. The two outside hitters, Poland’s Kamil Semeniuk (three aces) and Ukraine’s Oleh Plotnytskyi (one ace, one kill block) led the winners with 14 points apiece, while their Modena counterpart Luca Porro delivered a match-high 19, including four stuffs.

In all of the other 15th-leg matches over the weekend, the home favorites celebrated three-point wins.

Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza hammered out a 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-13) shutout of Vero Volley Monza with a match-high 16 points from 21-year-old opposite Alessandro Bovolenta, including two aces. Gas Sales improved to 29 and 9-6 in fifth place, while Vero Volley stayed in eighth on 12 and 4-11.

Cucine Lube Civitanova stand sixth, now on 28 and 9-6, after a hard-fought 3-0 (25-17, 27-25, 30-28) sweep of their home game against Sonepar Padova Padua. With two serving aces towards a 16-point tally, Bulgarian outside Aleksandar Nikolov was the best scorer for the winners, while Padova’s Serbian opposite Veljko Masulovic emerged as the best scorer of the match with 18 points. Padova dropped to 10th place on 11 and 4-11.

Seventh-placed Allianz Milan put together a 3-1 (25-19, 25-21, 30-32, 25-21) win over Cisterna Volley, with Belgian opposite Ferre Reggers topping the scorers chart with 23 points, including two aces and a block, towards his team’s success. Allianz improved to 26 and 9-6. Cisterna remained second from the bottom, in 11th place on 7 and 3-12.

In Saturday’s only match, this season’s SuperLega rookies MA Acqua San Bernardo Cuneo celebrated a 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-18) shutout of last season’s rookies Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina and distanced themselves from the relegation zone, surpassing Padova in the standings and rising to ninth place on 12 and 3-12. Grottazzolina remained stuck to the bottom, trailing in 12th place on 4 and 1-14. Cuneo’s star outside Ivan Zaytsev led the team with 14 points, while Grottazzolina’s Iranian opposite Amir Mohammad Golzadeh emerged as the best scorer of the match with 16.

The 16th leg will be played midweek, with five matches on Wednesday, January 14, and one on Thursday, January 15.
