The 17th leg in the Italian men’s volleyball SuperLega Credem Banca over the weekend closed on Sunday evening with Vero Volley Monza’s shocking straight-set defeat of trending Valsa Group Modena, with which the winners consolidated their claim for a spot in the playoffs.

Vero Volley Monza mastered a 3-0 (33-31, 25-23, 25-21) sweep of their home game against Valsa Group Modena to keep their position withing the playoff zone of the current standings. They improved to 15 points and a 5-12 win-loss record in eighth place, while Modena dropped from fourth to fifth on 34 and 11-6.

Vero Volley’s Hungarian opposite Krisztian Padar contributed a match-high 20 points, including 16 in attack at a 67% success rate, three kill blocks and an ace, thus earning the Most Valuable Player (MVP) honors. 18-year-old Bulgarian outside hitter Zhasmin Velichkov, who entered as a substitution during the first set, also showed a brilliant performance, contributing three blocks, one ace and seven spike kills at a 58% success rate. His German cross-court teammate Erik Rohrs also finished with 11 points, while middle blocker Leandro Mosca impressed with six kill blocks for the winners. Austrian opposite Paul Buchegger fired five aces towards a team-high 16 points for Modena.

“We're very satisfied. We weren't expecting it, but we believed in ourselves on the court, and that's what matters,” Mosca commented. “Modena are one of the league's best teams, so this win gives us a lot of energy and confidence for the upcoming games. Now we'll get right back to work.”

Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza were the team that surpassed Modena in the standings. They climbed to fourth place on 35 and 11-6 after Sunday’s convincing 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-22) home victory over Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina, leaving the opponents on 4 and 1-16 at the very bottom of the table, in 12th place. Turkish outside Efe Mandiraci (three aces) and his 21-year-old Brazilian cross-court teammate Lukas Bergmann (one ace, one kill block) shared the top scorer honors with 15 points apiece for Gas Sales.

In the only other change in the order of the standings during the weekend, Sonepar Padova Padua overtook rookies MA Acqua San Bernardo Cuneo into ninth place on 13 and 5-12 after Sunday’s hard-fought 3-2 (21-25, 25-12, 26-24, 23-25, 15-9) home win over Cisterna Volley, who also brought home a precious point in the drive to keep their place in the league and improved to 11 and 4-13 in 11th place, now seven points away from the relegation zone. Swinging at a 65% success rate, Serbian opposite Veljko Masulovic emerged as the best scorer of the match with 28 points, including two aces and two blocks.

In the big match-up of the weekend, table leaders Sir Susa Scai Perugia handed Cucine Lube Civitanova their first home loss of the season. The reigning club world and European champions achieved a 3-1 (25-17, 25-19, 22-25, 25-14) victory at the Eurosuole Forum on Sunday and improved to 44 and 15-2 on top of the standings. Last season’s runners-up stayed in sixth place on 31 and 10-7. Attacking at a 64% success rate, Polish outside Kamil Semeniuk led the winners with 16 points, including one ace and one block, while his Bulgarian counterpart Aleksandar Nikolov topped the match chart with 19 points for Lube, including four aces and a block.

In Saturday’s only game, in front of about 5,300 spectators, Rana Verona faced few issues against rookies MA Acqua San Bernardo Cuneo and mastered a 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-23) home victory to stay close behind Sir in the table, in second place on 42 and 15-2. Cuneo dropped to 10th on 12 and 3-14. Verona’s Slovenian outside Rok Mozic was the best scorer of the match with 17 points.

Itas Trentino Trento also kept the status quo among the top three in the standings. The defending champions hammered out a 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-17) sweep of their home game against Allianz Milan and improved to 39 and 13-4 in third place. Allianz stayed in seventh, now on 26 and 9-8. French opposite Theo Faure contributed a match-high 17 points, including four blocks, towards Trentino’s victory.

The 18th leg next weekend will offer one match on Saturday and another five on Sunday.
