Vero Volley aim at the last Coppa Italia vacancy

With seven of the eight participants in Coppa Italia already known, Vero Volley Monza are well positioned to book the last available spot on Saturday. With a home victory over winless Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina at the Opiquad Arena, they would do just that. Vero Volley are currently eighth in the current standings on 10 points and a 3-8 win-loss record. The extra game played was an early fixture of the 12th leg, which would not count towards national cup qualification, but it was a zero-point loss, anyway. Grottazzolina are without a shot at qualifying, but their priority now is to narrow the gap from the closest rivals and eventually get out of the relegation zone, which they are currently inhabiting – 12th place on 1 and 0-10.
The only team that could potentially take advantage of a possible Vero Volley loss and qualify for Italy Cup is Sonepar Padova Padua. Either way, they will be looking for the win over table neighbors Cisterna Volley as they visit them on Sunday. Cisterna stand second from the bottom, just above the relegation zone, in 11th place on 6 and 3-7, while Padova are in 10th place on 8 and 3-7.
Rana Verona will try to secure pole position in the cup bracket when they welcome Valsa Group Modena to the Agsm AIM hall on Sunday. They will certainly be aiming at the three points, but even winning one set would be enough to surpass table leaders Sir Susa Scai Perugia in the final half-season standings. Verona are currently in second place on 26 and 9-1, while Sir, who are heading to next week’s FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship in Brazil and have already played 12 SuperLega matches, including the first one of the second half of the season, are on 29 and 10-2. The Block Devils’ record from the first 11 legs alone stands at 26 and 9-2. Modena, on the other hand, are in fifth place on 19 and 6-4, but could potentially finish the half-season anywhere from fourth to seventh.
In another interesting match-up on Sunday, third-placed Itas Trentino Trento will entertain fourth-placed Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza at the BTS Arena. The defending champions stand on 24 and 8-2 and are well in a position to surpass Sir in the half-season table, should they win that game. Gas Sales are on 21 and 7-3, but don’t have a shot at overtaking Trentino even with a straight-set win.
Fifth-placed Cucine Lube Civitanova, on the other hand, stand on 17 and 5-5, and have a shot at overtaking Gas Sales. One of the conditions to achieve that would be a home win over Allianz Milan on Sunday. However, the visitors from Milan, who are seventh on 16 and 6-4, will surpass Lube, if they manage to hand them their first home defeat of the season.
