With Hungarian opposite Krisztian Padar on fire with a total of 32 points, Vero Volley Monza celebrated a 3-1 (25-22, 18-25, 30-28, 25-20) victory at Sonepar Padova Padua. While the hosts showed a great performance from the serving line, the winners imposed their will with a solid blocking effort, which brought them as many as 14 points. Six of those were authored by Padar. The Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the match also spiked 25 points at a 71% success rate in attack and put away an ace to become his team’s leading scorer of the match. The two outside hitters, Bulgaria’s Martin Atanasov and Germany’s Erik Rohrs, added 14 points apiece, while Padova’s Serbian opposite Veljko Masulovic produced a match-high 33 points, including five of the team’s nine aces. Vero Volley jumped two positions up the current standings and not only pushed further away from the relegation zone, but also entered the playoff zone, in eighth place on 10 points and a 3-8 win-loss record, positioning themselves well within reach of the last vacancy in the Italy Cup quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Padova, who remained the only other candidate, dropped to 10th place, on 8 and 3-7.
“The match was very intense, as the scores showed. Padova are a tough team at home, capable of giving anyone a hard time. We started very well and did well to win the third set after losing the second,” commented Vero Volley’s middle blocker Jacopo Larizza. “We're very happy. It was important to win, and now we'll prepare for the match against Grottazzolina. It will be an important match, because in addition to having points for survival at stake, it could also secure us a spot in the Italy Cup quarterfinals. We want to be there, for our fans and for the club, and we'll do our best to make it happen.”
The other five matches of the 10th leg were played over the weekend. In the most interesting one, on Saturday, Valsa Group Modena achieved a 3-1 (25-23, 26-24, 20-25, 25-11) home win over Cucine Lube Civitanova and surpassed them in the standings, rising to fifth place on 19 and 6-4, and leaving Lube in sixth on 17 and 5-5. Modena’s middle blocker Giovanni Sanguinetti fired five aces, raised three kill blocks and spiked five points at a 63% success rate on the way to the MVP nomination. Belarusian outside Uladzislau Davyskiba led the winners with 15 points, while Lube’s Bulgarian star Aleksandar Nikolov was once again above all on the scorer chart, with 20 points, including two aces. That was the only game of the leg, won by the home team.
Reigning European champions Sir Susa Scai Perugia, participants in next week’s FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship in Brazil, hammered out a 3-0 (25-10, 25-19, 25-19) shutout of their hosts Allianz Milan on Sunday to improve to 29 and 10-2 on top of the table. Allianz, who had already secured their place in the Coppa Italia competition, dropped to seventh on 16 and 6-4. Sir’s Ukrainian outside hitter Oleh Plotnytskyi was the MVP and the best scorer of the match with 12 points, including four blocks and three aces.
Rana Verona mastered a 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-20) sweep of their road game at MA Acqua San Bernardo Cuneo and continued to be the team with the fewest losses so far this season, standing in second place on 26 and 9-1. The SuperLega rookies dropped to ninth place on 9 and 2-9. Since they have already played all 11 of their matches of the first half of the regular season, they are now out of contention for the Coppa Italia quarterfinal spots. While Malian outside Noumory Keita and Brazilian opposite Darlan Souza led Verona’s scorers with 12 points each, American setter Micah Christenson was named MVP of the match. Cuneo’s French opposite Nathan Feral was the best scorer of the game with 18 points.
With the help of a total of 13 aces, defending champions Itas Trentino Trento cruised to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-18) victory at Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina. Outside Alessandro Michieletto contributed a match-high 18 points and picked up the MVP award. Trentino improved to 24 and 8-2 in third place, while still winless Grottazzolina trail bottom, in 12th place on 1 and 0-10.
Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza also brought home the three points from their trip to Cisterna Volley on Sunday to stay in fourth place, now on 21 and 7-3, and leave the opponents second from the bottom, in 11th place on 6 and 3-7.
