After two consecutive losses on the road, Mattia Bottolo fired as many as seven aces in three sets to help Cucine Lube Civitanova keep the tradition of winning at home, in one of Sunday’s matches of the eighth leg in the Italian men’s volleyball SuperLega Credem Banca. Meanwhile, Sir Susa Scai Perugia, participants in this month’s FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship, added two wins to their SuperLega record this week and regained their place on top of the current standings.

Cucine Lube Civitanova mastered a 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-18) sweep of their home game against rookies MA Acqua San Bernardo Cuneo. In addition to the seven aces, outside hitter Bottolo put away a kill block and seven kills in attack at a 70% success rate towards a match-high 15 points. He shared the top scorer honors with his Bulgarian cross-court teammate Aleksandar Nikolov, who fired another three aces and spiked 12 points right on his 22nd birthday. The Most Valuable Player (MVP) award went to Canadian opposite Eric Loeppky, who produced two aces, including the match winner, one kill block and 11 points in offense at a 73% success rate. French opposite Nathan Feral led Cuneo with 12 points, including three aces. Lube improved to 17 points and a 5-3 win-loss record in fourth place, while Cuneo are in eighth on 9 and 2-7.

“Tonight we were really hungry for a win, and I think it showed,” said Lube’s middle blocker Davi Tenorio. “Now we have a very intense period ahead of us. We'll be on the court practically every three days, given that the Champions League is starting soon. Our usual work routine will change, but we're ready and absolutely fired up.”

Reigning European champions Sir Susa Scai Perugia scored two home wins this week, and their Tunisian opposite Wassim Ben Tara scored a match-high 22 points in each of them. He raised three kill blocks in Wednesday’s 3-1 (25-14, 25-27, 25-22, 25-20) victory over Vero Volley Monza in an early game of the 12th leg. Ben Tara delivered two aces and a block, and spiked at an 83% success rate towards Sunday’s 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-20) shutout of Cisterna Volley. Having played two more games than most of the other SuperLega teams, Sir took over the top of the table on 23 and 8-2. Cisterna are in 10th place on 6 and 3-5.

Vero Volley are right below them, second from the bottom, on 4 and 1-8, after conceding another loss, this time at home in Saturday’s eighth leg opener against Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza. The visitors mastered a 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-17) sweep with a match-high 22 points from Turkish outside Efe Mandiraci, including three aces and two blocks. Gas Sales improved to 15 and 5-3 in sixth place.

Rana Verona put together a hard-fought 3-1 (26-24, 24-26, 25-22, 27-25) away victory over Sonepar Padova Padua with a leg-high 28 points from Noumory Keita. The Malian outside’s tally featured as many as five aces. Verona are running second on 20 and 7-1, while Padova are ninth on 8 and 3-5.

Defending champions Itas Trentino Trento took a 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 25-21) straight-set win on the road at Allianz Milan. Outside Alessandro Michieletto emerged as the best scorer of the match with 13 points, including three blocks. In third place on 18 and 6-2, Trentino have already secured their spot in the Italy Cup quarterfinals, along with the two teams above them in the table – Sir and Verona. Allianz dropped to seventh place on 13 and 5-3.

Valsa Group Modena were one of the teams that surpassed them in the standings. They ascended to fifth place on 16 and 5-3 after a 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-18, 25-18) home win over Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina. Three players shared the top scorer honors with 16 points each – Modena’s Belarusian outside Uladzislau Davyskiba and his Grottazzolina counterparts Bulgarian sub-in Georgi Tatarov and Giulio Magalini. Yuasa Battery are still winless at the bottom of the table on 1 and 0-8.

The ninth leg will be played midweek with five games on Wednesday, December 3, and another one on Thursday, December 4.
