Rana Verona kept their victory march in the Italian men’s volleyball SuperLega Credem Banca going with a big win over defending champions Itas Trentino Trento, powered by Malian outside hitter Noumory Keita, who fired a remarkable eight serving aces towards his team’s success. Sir Susa Scai Perugia also won their game on Sunday, so the two teams remain undefeated in the top two places of the current standings after the fourth leg of the regular season was completed. None of the six matches of the leg were resolved in straight sets, while one was pushed to five.

In front of five thousand fans on the sold-out stands at the Agsm AIM hall in Verona, coach Fabio Soli’s home team put together a 3-1 (21-25, 25-15, 25-21, 25-18) comeback victory over their mighty visitors from Trento. The Most Valuable Player (MVP) honors were earned by Malian outside Noumory Keita, who hammered eight direct points from the serving line and hit another 17 in attack at a 53% success rate, in addition to one kill block, to top the match charts with a total of 26 points. Brazilian opposite Darlan Souza spiked at a 70% success rate and produced one ace to finish with 15 points, while Slovenian outside Rok Mozic also reached the double digits with 13 points, all in swings at a 65% success rate. With 15 points to his name, French opposite Theo Faure was Itas Trentino’s most prolific scorer of the match. With a full set of 12 points and a 4-0 win-loss record, Rana Verona top the current standings. Reigning Italian champions Trentino are in fifth place on 6 and 2-2.

The other undefeated team, reigning European champions Sir Susa Scai Perugia, stand second on 11 and 4-0 after their 3-1 (25-20, 18-25, 25-20, 25-20) away victory at Valsa Group Modena, now on 7 and 2-2 in fourth place. Tunisian opposite Wassim Ben Tara contributed a team-high 12 points, including one ace and one kill block, towards Sir’s success. His Austrian Modena counterpart Paul Buchegger scored a match-high 14 points, also including one ace and one block.

Cucine Lube Civitanova stayed unbeaten at home as they claimed a 3-1 (25-17, 25-22, 23-25, 25-21) win over Cisterna Volley on Sunday. Outside hitters Mattia Bottolo and Aleksandar Nikolov shared the top scorer honors with 16 points apiece. Bottolo’s tally featured two kill blocks, an ace and a 57% success rate in attack, while the Bulgarian star put up three stuffs. Lube climbed to third place on 10 and 3-1, while Cisterna stand second from the bottom, in 11th place on 2 and 1-3.

In the only five-setter of the weekend, Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza managed to come back from two sets down at SuperLega rookies MA Acqua San Bernardo Cuneo and emerge with a 3-2 (25-27, 18-25, 25-15, 25-20, 15-10) victory on Saturday, positioning themselves in sixth place on 5 and 2-2. Cuneo are ninth on 5 and 1-3. Turkish outside Efe Mandiraci led Gas Sales with 18 points, including one ace and one block, while Cuneo’s French opposite Nathan Feral topped the match charts with 22 points, including two blocks and one ace.

Allianz Milan took a 3-1 (22-25, 25-19, 25-21, 28-26) home win over Vero Volley Monza to improve to 5 and 2-2 in seventh place. Vero Volley are running 10th on 3 and 1-3. Belgian opposite Ferre Reggers hammered out a leg-high 35 points for Allianz, registering an impressive 71% success rate in attack, three aces and three kill blocks.

Sonepar Padova Padua achieved their second victory of the season, a 3-1 (25-22, 26-24, 20-25, 25-21) home win over Yuasa Battery Grottazzolina, with a match-high 21 points from outside hitter Mattia Orioli, who put up three blocks and signed off with a 62% success rate in offense. Padova ascended to eighth place on 5 and 2-2, while Grottazzolina remained winless at the bottom of the table on 1 and 0-4.

Next weekend will offer five matches, early fixtures from the sixth-leg program – two on Saturday, November 8, and three on Sunday, November 9.
