The first match of the series that went beyond three sets was decided in a tie-breaker. In a rollercoaster drama in front of over four thousand fans on the stands at the Eurosuole Forum in Civitanova Marche, Itas Trentino Trento celebrated a 3-2 (21-25, 28-26, 25-17, 20-25, 15-9) victory.
Alessandro Michieletto was not only Trentino’s best scorer of the match, but he had an important say from the serving line in the momentum-changer ending of the second set, when the score went from 23-20 Lube’s way to 24-23 Trentino’s way. The 23-year-old international outside hitter led his team with a total of 22 points. His tally was made up of four aces, two kill blocks and 16 kills in attack at an impressive success rate of 67%. At the end of the day, he was honored as MVP of the finals.
Trentino’s other outside, Daniele Lavia, chipped in with another three aces towards a 13-point total. Luxembourgish-born opposite Kamil Rychlicki added another 12 points, including the championship winner at the end of the tie-breaker.
Lube’s Bulgarian outside Aleksandar Nikolov was the best scorer of the match with 23 points to his name, including three aces and two blocks. He was swinging at a 60% success rate. His cross-court teammate Mattia Bottolo put away another 19 points for Lube, also with three aces and two blocks under his belt.
“It was a big championship final series! We knew Civitanova's qualities,” said Lavia after the game. “Today's match was the most difficult. Winning the second set gave us an extra push. There is a bit of regret for some cups. In some competitions we could have done better. I dedicate this championship title to the fans of Trento, who were not present today at the sports hall, to the club and to my family.”
“It didn’t go as we hoped, but I think it was still an extraordinary season for us,” Lube’s libero and captain Fabio Balaso commented. “I don’t think many people believed at the beginning that it could go like this, with a Coppa Italia trophy in the bag and two other title finals played. At home we only lost three games all season. Everyone gave their all and everyone deserves applause, starting with the team, going through the staff and the club, up to the fans, who never failed to support us. We trained hard every day, we overcame difficult moments, and we can be satisfied and proud of ourselves. This project is only at the beginning and I hope it will bring us many other great results in the future.”
The SuperLega season is not completely over just yet. The fifth set in the final standings and the last remaining Italian ticket to next season’s European club competitions will be decided between Valsa Group Modena and Allianz Milan on Saturday, May 10.
