Yuasa Battery swept the best-of-three final series against Emma Villas Siena, producing a 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-22) shutout at home on Sunday and a 3-1 (25-21, 19-25, 25-13, 25-19) away victory on Thursday. 29-year-old Danish opposite Rasmus Breuning Nielsen fired 24 points in each of the two matches, topping the scorers’ charts in both. The team’s second opposite, 27-year-old Bulgarian Aleksandar Mitkov, is the only other foreign player on the team’s roster.
The team from Grottazzolina headed the final Serie A2 regular season standings on a 21-5 win-loss record and 59 points, five points clear on top of the table. As regular season winners, they advanced directly to the semifinal playoffs. Their series against Consar Ravenna was pushed to a third-match decider, which they won after a five-set battle at home, 3-2 (25-20, 15-25, 25-23, 19-25, 15-10), to advance to the deciding playoff against Emma Villas.
Over 500 of the small city of Grottazzolina’s a little over three thousand inhabitants travelled to Siena on Thursday to witness and participate in the historic moment.
