Modena’s Bruno Rezende in action

The ninth leg of the 2023-2024 SuperLega Credem Banca regular season will be completed this weekend with two games on Friday and three on Sunday. In one of them, the star-studded squads of Valsa Group Modena and Itas Trentino Trento will face each other at the PalaPanini on Sunday, December 10, at 18:00 local time (17:00 UTC).

The first match of the leg, in which Sir Susa Vim Perugia shut out Pallavolo Padova Padua at home, was played in advance on November 22, since the reigning club world champions are trying to defend their title at the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship in India this week. This opens Trentino’s road back to the top of the current standings, which is currently occupied by Sir on an 8-1 win-loss record and 24 points. If Marco Podrascanin, Alessandro Michieletto and their teammates from Trentino (8-0, 22) remain undefeated after their trip to Modena, they will overtake their rivals from Perugia in the first place.

Valsa Group, on the other hand, are seventh on 5-3 and 12. For the likes of Bruno Rezende and Osmany Juantorena, this is probably way below where they want to be and a potential home loss to defending champions Trentino might even put their qualification for the Coppa Italia competition at risk, which means the fans in Modena are set to witness a fierce battle on the court.

Modena and Trentino met four times last season, twice in the SuperLega, once in Supecoppa Italiana and once in Coppa Italia, and the team from Trento emerged victorious on all four occasions. Modena’s most recent win over Trentino dates back to their SuperLega match on February 2022.

“We must find the consistency and continuity to always express ourselves at a high level. This is exactly the objective for the next games. The match against Trento will be an excellent test for us. We will see where we are against a team that has won every match in the league so far. It will be a complicated match, we will play at home and we want to be pushed by a very hot PalaPanini.” Dragan Stankovic, middle blocker of Valsa Group Modena
“I think playing at the PalaPanini in Modena is always one of the most difficult matches of the entire season because of the atmosphere, the history and the opponent. So on Sunday we will have to be ready for a very tough battle. We know that in front of their own audience, the Valsa Group team will offer something more than usual.” Riccardo Sbertoli, setter of Itas Trentino Trento

The SuperLega weekend will start on Friday at 18:00 (17:00), when Cisterna Volley, currently in ninth place on a 2-6 win-loss record and 7 points, host last season’s silver medallists Cucine Lube Civitanova, standing fifth on 5-3 and 13. Also on Friday, 11th-placed Gioiella Prisma Taranto (0-8, 5) will take on the challenging task of achieving their first victory of the season as they welcome third-placed Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza (5-3, 17) at 20:30 (19:30).

Sunday’s competition programme will start with bottom-of-the-table rookies Farmitalia Catania (1-7, 3) entertaining fourth-placed Mint Vero Volley Monza (5-3, 14) at 16:30 (15:30), before Rana Verona, standing 10th on 2-6 and 7, and Allianz Milan, sixth on 4-4 and 13, close the leg with a game at the Pala Agsm AIM, starting at 20:30 (19:30).
