ZAKSA and Jastrzebski to open PlusLiga weekend in Poland

The Polish men’s volleyball PlusLiga offers four fourth-leg matches in a promising weekend ahead. The program opens with a big game between ZAKSA Kedzierzyn-Kozle and JSW Jastrzebski Wegiel Jastrzebie-Zdroj on Saturday, November 8, and is highlighted by a high-profile clash between BOGDANKA LUK Lublin v PGE GiEK SKRA Belchatow on Sunday, November 9.

Mighty ZAKSA Kedzierzyn-Kozle will host mighty JSW Jastrzebski Wegiel Jastrzebie-Zdroj at the Azoty hall for the PlusLiga weekend opener on Saturday at 14:45 local time (13:45 UTC). The hosts will be desperate to score their first win of the season after entering the new edition of the league on a negative streak of three consecutive losses and holding 11^th place on 2 points and a 0-3 win-loss record. Last regular season winners Jastrzebski Wegiel won two of the three games they played, but are not that far above ZAKSA in the current standings, taking eighth place on 5 and 2-1. This week they also lost the Poland Super Cup final and will be looking to bounce back with a positive result in Kedzierzyn-Kozle.

Last season, ZAKSA and Jastrzebski Wegiel traded three-point home victories, while the all-time head-to-head record in the rivalry between the two clubs in the PlusLiga stands at 51-47 in favor of Jastrzebski Wegiel.

Sunday afternoon will also offer a big PlusLiga game, between the two highest placed teams among those that have played only three matches so far this season. Defending champions BOGDANKA LUK Lublin will welcome PGE GiEK SKRA Belchatow to the Globus hall at 14:45 (13:45). The two teams are neighbors in the table. Undefeated Lublin stand fifth on 8 and 3-0. They will also be riding on the momentum of their historic triumph with the Poland Super Cup trophy on Wednesday, when they mastered a 3-1 (28-26, 25-27, 25-16, 27-25) victory over Jastrzebski Wegiel in the final in Katowice with a match-high 27 points from the Most Valuable Player of the game, super star Wilfredo Leon. Meanwhile, SKRA stand in sixth place on 6 and 2-1.

The last time these two teams met back in January, they put together a five-set thriller in Belchatow, with Lublin coming back from two sets down to celebrate a reverse sweep and extend their winning streak in the head-to-head series to five consecutive matches. The overall PlusLiga balance between the two clubs stands at 6-2 BOGDANKA’s way.

In Saturday’s evening match, Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie, participants in next month’s FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship in Brazil, will entertain PlusLiga rookies InPost ChKS Chelm at 17:30 (16:30). Aluron stand third in the table on 9 and 3-1, while Chelm are in 10^th place on 2 and 1-2.

The weekend will close with a game between two winless teams, Steam Hemarpol Politechnika Czestochowa and Slepsk Malow Suwalki, on Sunday at 17:30 (16:30). The hosts from Czestochowa are running second from the bottom, in 12^th place on 1 and 0-3, while the visitors from Suwalki trail in 14^th place on 0 and 0-3.
