Friday’s 16th-leg match between Energa Trefl Gdansk and Slepsk Malow Suwalki offered another thrilling plot for the fans of the men’s volleyball PlusLiga in Poland. After stunning the mighty JSW Jastrzebski Wegiel Jastrzebie-Zdroj in their previous match, Slepsk Malow were on the verge of another shocker after taking a two-set advantage upon their visit to Gdansk. The home team, however, managed to reverse-sweep the game, but closed it off deep into the overtime of the tie-breaker.

In front of close to three thousand spectators at the Ergo Arena, Energa Trefl Gdansk denied three opponent match points in the fifth set to squeeze out a 3-2 (21-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-14, 22-20) victory over Slepsk Malow Suwalki and climb to sixth place in the current standings on 26 points and a 10-5 win-loss record. Meanwhile, the team from Suwalki earned a point to improve to 15 and 4-11 in 10th place.
Trefl’s outside hitter Piotr Orczyk claimed the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the match award after contributing 22 points to the victory. He spiked 18 at a 64% success rate in attack and added two aces and two kill blocks to his tally. Trending opposite Aliaksei Nasevich also chipped in with 22 points, including three aces. German outside Tobias Brand and substitute middle blocker Pawel Pietraszko also reached the double digits for the winners, with 18 and 13 points, respectively.
Slepsk Malow’s Bulgarian outside Asparuh Asparuhov once again showed a brilliant performance, which resulted in a match-high 25 points, including five direct points from the serving line.
This weekend is reserved for the TAURON Puchar Polski Final Four tournament in Krakow, while the PlusLiga 16th-leg program will offer another four matches next week, on January 13, 14 and 15. The last fixture of the leg, between Steam Hemarpol Politechnika Czestochowa and Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie, is scheduled on February 4.
