On Thursday evening, Asseco Resovia Rzeszow put together a 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-19) sweep of their road game at Cuprum Stilon Gorzow Wielkopolski, with a match-high 14-points from outside hitter and Most Valuable Player (MVP) Artur Szalpuk (62% success rate in attack, two aces, two kill blocks), who shared the top scorer honors with French counterpart Mathis Henno. Resovia climbed to third place in the current standings on 29 points and a 10-5 win-loss record, while Cuprum Stilon were pushed to the bottom, in 14th place on 11 and 3-12.
Asseco Resovia Rzeszow are now set to host table leaders PGE Projekt Warsaw at the Podpromie hall on Sunday at 14:45 local time (13:45 UTC). Last season’s bronze medalists top the current standings on 34 and 12-3. However, Resovia have already beaten them twice in straight sets this season, in November’s PlusLiga game in Warsaw and in a Poland Cup semifinal in Krakow last week.
Defending champions BOGDANKA LUK Lublin, currently running second on 32 and 11-4, will also play on the road this weekend. On Saturday at 14:45 (13:45), they will visit PGE GiEK SKRA Belchatow at the Energia hall. SKRA are in sixth place on 27 and 9-5, and hoping to break out of a three-game losing streak between the PlusLiga and the Puchar Polski. They managed to upset BOGDANKA in four sets, when they met in Lublin earlier this season, in November.
Fourth-placed Indykpol AZS Olsztyn will play away this weekend too. They will travel to Energa Trefl Gdansk for the leg’s closing game at the Ergo Arena on Sunday at 17:30 (16:30). Indykpol stand on 29 and 10-4 in fourth place, while Trefl occupy seventh place on 26 and 10-5. November’s match between the two teams in Olsztyn was won by Indykpol in four sets.
Last season’s PlusLiga silver medalists and this season’s FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship bronze medalists Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie will have a road game on Friday at 20:00 (19:00), visiting rookies InPost ChKS Chelm. Aluron are running in fifth place on 27 and 9-5. Chelm, who produced a sensational away victory over champions Lublin earlier this week, are in 11th place on 13 and 4-11. The team from Zawercie shut out their visitors from Chelm when the two met in November.
In a clash relevant to the race for the playoff spots, JSW Jastrzebski Wegiel Jastrzebie-Zdroj will entertain ZAKSA Kedzierzyn-Kozle. The match will serve off at 17:30 (16:30) on Saturday. The two mighty rivals are neighbors in the standings, on opposite sides of the red line for the playoffs. Jastrzebski Wegiel take the eighth place on 24 and 9-6, while ZAKSA are ninth on 20 and 6-9. ZAKSA swept the previous meeting with Jastrzebski Wegiel at home in November in straight sets.
The remaining two matches will be important for the scuffle among several teams to avoid relegation. Friday’s leg opener at 17:30 (16:30) will feature Slepsk Malow Suwalki and Steam Hemarpol Politechnika Czestochowa. The hosts from Suwalki stand in 10th place on 15 and 4-11, while the visitors from Czestochowa are now second from the bottom, in 13th place on 11 and 3-11. November’s game between the two teams in Czestochowa offered a five-set battle with Steam emerging victorious in the tie-breaker.
Table trailers Cuprum Stilon Gorzow Wielkopolski will welcome Barkom Kazhany Lviv on Saturday at 20:00 (19:00). The Ukrainian team stands third from the bottom, in 12th place on 11 and 3-12. These two also battled it out in five sets, when they met in early December, with the visitors from Gorzow Wielkopolski celebrating in the tie-breaker.
