PGE Projekt Warsaw moved to within a win of the bronze medals in the Polish PlusLiga. On Sunday, they achieved their second victory over last year’s champions Jastrzebski Wegiel Jastrzebie-Zdroj to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five third-place playoff.

Opposite Bartlomiej Boladz, who subbed in for Germany’s Linus Weber during the first set and stayed on as a starter for the next three, contributed a match-high 19 points towards PGE Projekt Warsaw’s 3-1 (28-30, 26-24, 25-21, 25-20) comeback victory over the regular season winners and earned the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. He put away a kill block and hammered 18 points in swings at a solid 64% success rate in attack. Middle blockers Jakub Kochanowski and Andrzej Wrona spiked with 70+% success each and raised three and four kill blocks towards total tallies of 14 and 11 points, respectively. Outside hitters Tobias Brand of Germany with 15 points and Artur Szalpuk with 13 also reached the double digits on Projekt’s side.
Their counterpart Tomasz Fornal matched Boladz’s 19 points to lead Jastrzebski Wegiel’s scorers. Opposite Lukasz Kaczmarek and sub-in outside Luciano Vicentin of Argentina added 17 and 14 points, respectively.
The next match of the series for the bronze, that could also be the last, is scheduled on Wednesday, May 7.
