The 16th leg in the men’s volleyball PlusLiga in Poland started off in a dramatic fashion. Despite their status as match favorites and their home court advantage, Indykpol AZS Olsztyn were pushed to five sets by their Ukrainian visitors Barkom Kazhany Lviv and had to survive as many as five opponent match points before celebrating the victory.

In front of over four thousand spectators at the Urania hall on Tuesday, Indykpol AZS Olsztyn squeezed out a 3-2 (25-19, 22-25, 25-14, 23-25, 20-18) victory over Barkom Kazhany Lviv deep into the overtime of the fifth set and extended their winning streak to four consecutive matches (including their Poland Cup quarterfinal). The team from Olstztyn rose to third place in the current standings on 29 points and a 10-4 win-loss record. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian team widened its negative streak to seven losses in a row, but with the point earned on Tuesday it moved back up to 11th place in the table on 11 and 3-12.

Indykpol’s German setter Johannes Tille was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the match. As many as three of his strikers reached 20+ points in scoring. Outside hitter Pawel Halaba led the way with 25 points, including four aces and a kill block. His German cross-court teammate Moritz Karlitzek delivered as many as five aces, including the match winner in the tie-breaker, towards a 20-point tally. Czech opposite Jan Hadrava also finished with 20 points, including four blocks and two aces, while outside hitter Ilia Kovalov was Barkom Kazhany’s most prolific scorer with 19 points, including two aces.

The PlusLiga 16th-leg program will continue with a game between Energa Trefl Gdansk and Slepsk Malow Suwalki on Friday, January 9. Another four matches will be played next week, on January 13, 14 and 15. The last fixture of the leg, between Steam Hemarpol Politechnika Czestochowa and Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie, is scheduled on February 4.
