There is a new leader in the current standings of the men’s volleyball PlusLiga in Poland. After a shocking home loss to rookies InPost ChKS Chelm, defending champions BOGDANKA LUK Lublin yielded to PGE Projekt Warsaw, who mastered a home win over mighty JSW Jastrzebski Wegiel Jastrzebie-Zdroj, as another three games of the 16th leg unrolled so far this week. Meanwhile, mighty ZAKSA Kedzierzyn-Kozle beat PGE GiEK SKRA Belchatow to put an end to a negative four-match losing run.

Just a couple of days after picking up their first ever Puchar Polski trophy and adding it to a collection, already featuring their first ever CEV Challenge Cup trophy, their first ever PlusLiga national title and their first ever national super cup crown, harvested over a period of less than a year, BOGDANKA LUK Lublin were stunned at home by PlusLiga newcomers InPost ChKS Chelm. The visitors managed to disappoint a home crowd of over four thousand fans in the stands of the Globus in Lublin with a sensational 3-1 (25-17, 20-25, 25-23, 29-27) upset, taking full advantage of the absence of many of BOGDANKA’s top-caliber stars from the court.

Chelm’s opposite Remigiusz Kapica contributed a match-high 26 points, all in swings at a 59% success rate and claimed the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. His teammate, outside hitter Tomasz Piotrowski, added another 16 points, including four kill blocks. As many as four players reached the double digits on Lublin’s side – Canadian sub-in outside Jackson Young with 13 points (one ace, one block), outside Jakub Wachnik with 13 (two blocks), French outside and opposite Hilir Henno with 11 (two aces) and Canadian middle blocker Daenan Gyimah with 10 (four blocks, three aces).

Chelm, who were at the very bottom of the table before this match, rocketed three positions up to 11th place on 13 points and a 4-11 win-loss record, while at the opposite end of the standings, Lublin gave up their first place and fell to second on 32 and 11-4.

It was last season’s bronze medalists PGE Projekt Warsaw who took over the top after Wednesday evening’s 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-19) home victory over JSW Jastrzebski Wegiel Jastrzebie-Zdroj in a remake of the third-place playoff match-up. Projekt improved to 34 and 12-3 and surpassed BOGDANKA by two points. Meanwhile, 2024-2025 regular season winners Jastrzebski Wegiel remained just above the cut-off for the playoffs, in eighth place on 24 and 9-6. Outside hitter Bartosz Bednorz was the best scorer of the match with 24 points. He spiked 21 at an impressive 70% success rate in attack and added two blocks and an ace to his tally, earning the MVP award.

The PlusLiga competition week started with ZAKSA Kedzierzyn-Kozle’s 3-1 (19-25, 31-29, 25-21, 25-18) home win over PGE GiEK SKRA Belchatow on Tuesday. ZAKSA narrowed the distance to Jastrzebski Wegiel in the table, but are still four points away from the playoff zone, in ninth place on 20 and 6-9. SKRA stand fifth on 27 and 9-5. Outside hitter Rafal Szymura picked up the MVP nomination after leading ZAKSA with a match-high 19 points, including as many as five aces and two blocks.

The 16th leg continues on Thursday, January 15, with a game between Cuprum Stilon Gorzow Wielkopolski and Asseco Resovia Rzeszow, while the last fixture of the leg, between Steam Hemarpol Politechnika Czestochowa and Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie, is scheduled on February 4.
